Position Summary:

The Network Department takes a macro view of our organizational network, evaluating the full breadth and depth of the entire sector to ensure excellence in service and alignment with the needs of the community. Understanding that leading edge frontline services are a critical component of a community of care and connection, the department supports our agency partners in achieving and maintaining best-in-class performance by offering a wide menu of financial and non-financial supports. A key function of the Network Department is assuring that the organizations serving our community stay relevant and responsive in a fast-changing world.


The Network Department’s key functions include the following:

  • Facilitation of cross-departmental collaborative planning conversations to identify opportunities to strengthen the services provided for Jewish (and other) communities in New York.
  • Ongoing relationships with agency leadership, convening and connecting to provide state-of-the -art service and real time response.
  • Annual award of $35MM in General Operating Support to agencies selected as core partners.
  • Coordination of efforts to build and sustain a 21st century network of not-for-profit partners including attention to critical issues including DREI and environmental sustainability.
  • Creation and management of experimental projects designed to test new models of service delivery and engagement.
  • Oversight of capacity-building and organizational development efforts to strengthen UJA’s core partners and other nonprofits in the UJA network.


The Planning Executive is part of a team of diverse talent jointly committed to the task of building a connected and caring community in New York, Israel, and around the world. This person is expected to understand nonprofit organizational infrastructure and systems and to help apply this knowledge to our work with agency partners as well as the larger communal landscape. The Planning Executive plays a key leadership role in developing and implementing a comprehensive capacity-building strategy to ensure that UJA’s agency partners are 21st Century workplaces.


Major Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a lead professional on the 21st Century Workplaces strategic funding portfolio geared towards UJA’s closest network partners.
  • Develop and implement strategy to support our network of agencies in adopting best practices in diversity equity & inclusion, technology, and other priority areas.
  • Build and maintain relationships with experts in the field to serve as thought partners.
  • Strengthen support modality adoption of best practices of 21st Century organizations (while working with agencies to identify scope and define projects).
  • Support the implementation of appropriate non-financial capacity building resources in the field.
  • Provide strategic thought leadership and analysis that identify meaningful trends and opportunities across the nonprofit sector in New York as this portfolio of work grows and evolves.
  • Build and maintain relationships with core partners and across UJA's network of grantees.
  • Manage sub-committee(s) of UJA donors responsible for overseeing the Network Department’s capacity building and planning functions. Serve as a thought partner in designing Network committee meetings across the department.
  • Participate in generative cross-departmental initiatives, based on emergent and priority areas of interest to UJA.


Skills and Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in social work, public administration, communal service or related fields preferred.
  • 2-4 years related professional experience in a Federation or similar organization preferred.
  • 2-4 years related practical experience with non-profit operations, infrastructure & capacity building.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communication skills.
  • Thrive amidst collegial diversity.
  • Adept at working independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented, with ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
  • Self-starter, creative thinker and curious.
  • Committed and passionate about the organizational mission.

Experience

Preferred
  • 2 - 4 years: Related practical experience with non-profit operations, infrastructure & capacity building
  • 2 - 4 years: Related professional experience in a Federation or similar organization
