Position in this function is under the leadership and direction of the Chief of the Office for Provider Advancement (OPA), this position will lead strategic development, implementation, and execution of strategic and operating objectives to support the advancement of health equity across the enterprise, driving alignment across UHG and Optum, within Optum Health (OH), and with executive leadership and key stakeholders. Responsible to lead the Health Equity Pillar of Excellence within the OPA and carry on the duties as assigned in pursuit of OPA’s mission.  Responsible for planning, coordinating, directing and monitoring all operational, organizational, strategic and financial aspects of the Health Equity pillar, under the governance of the Physician Executive Council (PEC). Ensures health equity initiatives carried out by the OPA support and demonstrate Optum’s commitment to the Quadruple Aim.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the pillar lead for the PEC health equity priority and national voice to support the advancement of health equity efforts across Optum Health 
  • Enables Optum Health to evolve and grow as one of the largest, national ambulatory health care delivery systems with advanced health equity competencies in our products and services
  • Actively engages PEC champions to promote and advance health equity efforts throughout Optum Health
  • Achieves strategic objectives and success outcomes for health equity, aligning with the overall priorities of Optum Health
  • Ensures effective tracking and monitoring of key performance and quality indicators
  • Develops and delivers on health equity plenary and breakout sessions at the Optum Partnership Forum
  • Builds out the health equity content on the OPA internal website
  • Supports health equity components in the evolving clinical model within Optum Health
  • Monitors and tracks inventory of health equity training programs at local, regional and national levels
  • Partners with key internal stakeholders to collaborate on collecting, analyzing and utilizing health equity data to address avoidable inequalities and injustices; to close gaps in care, eliminating disparities in health care; and to improve equitable access to care
  • Cultivate positive health equity brand awareness for Optum, along with improve patient, consumer, teammate and provider experience
  • Supports health equity session(s) at Design Shop


Desired Skill Set:

  • Demonstrates an understanding of federal policies (including Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services) on health equity and stays abreast of changes to these policies and overall health equity research
  • Has familiarity with Medicare Stars Program and quality measures, specifically those impacting health equity and vulnerable populations
  • Communicates and coordinates effectively with and/or help internal and/or external partners, displaying excellent oral and written communication, influence and decision-making skills
  • Has solid relationships in the healthcare industry and ability to effectively engage in health equity promotion and advancement
  • Maintains a broad understanding of the principles of financial management - uses cost-benefit thinking to set priorities and prove value to the enterprise
  • Works well in a team environment, establishing good rapport at various levels of the organization while also working with and relating to people from diverse backgrounds
  • Shows flexibility and ability to adapt to a rapidly growing and changing organization 
  • Multi-tasks and manages multiple work streams at once
  • Is proficient in Microsoft Office Suite:  Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work experience 
  • 5 years of experience driving change and obtaining results in a large corporate, matrixed environment
  • 5 years of product management, product development or similar experience
  • 5 years of experience in people leadership and management, including direct experience leading, managing, and mentoring successful teams in a virtual/geographically diverse environment
  • 3 years of embedding equity, diversity, and inclusion into design projects or making experiences accessible to all people
  • Experience specifically with health equity
  • Solid knowledge of the healthcare industry, products, and services
  • Proven consultation and relationship management skills at the business leadership level
  • Demonstrated process improvement/change management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to set strategic direction as well as develop and execute on tactical plans


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Health Administration, Business Administration, Public Health 
  • Proven ability to analyze healthcare trends and develop solutions to address health inequities

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for California, Colorado, Connecticut, Nevada, New York, Rhode Island or Washington residents is $118,000 to $226,800. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
