Job Summary
The Poison Information Specialist (SPI) serves as a resource on poisoning, drug, environmental, and medical information for the general public, health care professionals, and media services. Provides advanced professional services by answering questions from health professionals and the general public through a 24-hour statewide hotline. Makes diagnostic decisions and recommendations regarding treatment. Provides educational services to health care professionals and the general public about poison prevention.

Ability to understand all phases of toxicology and poison center activities.
Ability to assess, evaluate, and provide treatment recommendations in poisoning situations.
Ability to evaluate unusual occurrences and effectively communicate appropriate information.
Ability to utilize effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work under pressure in a potentially stressful environment.
Ability to work with various software programs.
Ability to apply effective organizational skills.
Ability to multi-task and work independently.
Bilingual English/Spanish required. Work Experience Previous Poison Center experience preferred. Licensure/Registration/Certification Current Texas Pharmacist license required, or obtained within 6 months of hire. Certified Specialist in Poison Information required. Certified Specialist in Poison Information from the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) required; or obtained within two attempts once minimum exam eligibility requirements* are met; not to exceed three years from date of hire. *Minimum eligibility requirements for examination are 2000 worked hours as a SPI and 2000 human exposures cases handled. Education and Training Graduate from an accredited College/School of Pharmacy. 30 hours of ACPE approved continuing education every 2 years.
