Departmental Overview

The College of Engineering at UC Berkeley is recognized for its educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top three Engineering colleges in the United States. With approximately 230 regular faculty members, 2150 graduate students and 3450 undergraduate students located in seven academic departments, Engineering is the second largest college on the Berkeley campus. Operating expenditures for the College as a whole exceed $190.5 million annually.

EECS is the largest Department on the UC Berkeley campus consisting of over 130 faculty, adjunct, active emeriti and PIR appointments, 3,000 undergraduates between the College of Engineering and Letters and Science, more than 700 graduate students, and 65 staff members. The EECS Center for Student Affairs (CSA) provides a centralized function that serves the needs of students, faculty, and staff in meeting the academic mission of teaching and research from student recruitment and admissions through graduation and alumni relations.

The EECS Assistant Director of Student Diversity is responsible for providing a wide range of student services for an academic department. This position provides educational services to current and prospective students, faculty, campus constitutes, and the general public. The position also provides assistance to EECS and L&S Computer Science majors and intended majors in academic advising, recruitment, financial aid, admissions, student orientations and events and related programs. This position reports to the Director of Student Diversity for the EECS Department and serves as their backup.

This is a one-year, 50% contract appointment

Responsibilities

Program Oversight: Within an academic department / school / college, provides and makes recommendations for the improvement of Department / School / College Policies. Advises chairs / deans on the formulation of department /school / college policy on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies: recommends new or changed policies; and recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent.

Oversees and administers the Graduate Fellows Program for entering doctoral students. In conjunction with the Director of Student Diversity, works to recruit students into the Fellows program and designs and leads the workshop series. Serves as a supplemental advisor to Fellows and provides additional resources upon matriculation.

Provides data analysis for the Graduate Fellows Program and Computer Science Scholars Program both on a semesterly basis and for ad hoc inquiries.

Coordinates with EECS Department student organizations on annual funding allocations, departmental space policies, and events.

Recruitment and Admissions: Advises department / school / college on outreach strategies, and helps identify targeted institutions to meet organization's goals; coordinates, reviews and advises chair / dean and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC courses.

Plans and implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals. Serves as main point of contact for undergraduate outreach efforts to K-12, student groups, and community college students. Works closely with undergraduate advising staff to coordinate CS Education Day.

In collaboration with the Director of Student Diversity, works with prospective majors in both EECS and L&S Computer Science. Assists with determining admissions to the Computer Science Major at the departmental level. Enlists the support of faculty in difficult admission decision cases. Serves as a liaison for faculty evaluation of pending articulation agreements with California Community Colleges.

Special Projects: Applying advanced student services concepts, provides the most complex student services to the organization's management, faculty and students.

Works independently on complex special projects that arise throughout the year related to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the EECS Department.

Academic Advising: Identifies and refers for resolution intricate student issues / grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises; recommends petition exceptions that affect the requirements of multiple departments; facilitates new course approval through interaction with the Coordination of College Policy, Academic Senate, or similar organization.

Financial Aid: Recommends resolution of extremely sensitive, specialized, and / or complex financial aid issues; and / or administers departments / schools / colleges block grants and restricted funds.

Assists with student award payments and stipends, student conference travel, and annual EECS Student Awards payments.

Participates in professional student services committees that develop policies / procedures with nationwide impact.

Maintains and updates knowledge of College and campus student affairs issues by taking appropriate classes, attending campus-wide Student Affairs meetings and networking with peers. Keeps abreast of national trends related to advising support as well as best practices in student affairs administration.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Interpersonal skills.
Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
Ability in problem identification and reasoning; ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
Skills in monitoring / assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
Preferred Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
Advanced knowledge of complex visa and immigration policies, procedures and regulatory requirements for international students and scholars.
In-depth knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • This is a one-year, 50% contract position. Contract positions may be extended based on operational demand. Contract positions are eligible to participate in the health and welfare programs offered by UC Berkeley.
