Departmental Overview

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (CBE) is an instructional and research Department in the College of Chemistry. CBE provides exceptional opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain a thorough fundamental knowledge of all fields in chemical and biomolecular engineering.

In broad terms, research conducted in CBE can be divided into the following areas: catalysis and reaction engineering, electrochemical engineering, polymers and complex fluids, microsystems technology and microelectrics, molecular simulations and theory, interfacial engineering, biochemical and bioprocess engineering, biomedical engineering, and synthetic biology. The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering collaborates with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).

The Department has 17 ladder ranked faculty, four regularly appointed non-Senate faculty, two full time Lecturers and four to six temporary lecturers each year. CBE is home to about 425 undergraduates and 135 Masters and Doctoral students. Approximately 95 graduate and undergraduate students are hired annually as GSI's and Readers in support of the teaching program. In addition, CBE is host to approximately 75 visiting postdoctoral fellows, visiting scholars and researchers. Teaching and research facilities are located in several buildings within the College of Chemistry's complex, and several faculty have appointments at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as well.

Responsibilities

The Department's budget includes state and federal funds, discretionary funds, gifts and endowments, scholarship and fellowship funds totaling approximately $15 million.

Financial/Grant Management:
Formulate operating and proposal budgets, analysis of financial data, expenditure projections and forecasting. Integrates UCB and LBNL reports to create current and accurate financial data ensuring fiscal integrity. Utilize reports to anticipate and resolve operational, fiscal, or other discrepancies. Utilize campus and LBNL on-line financial systems for financial reporting. Reviews and reconciles monthly financial reports for campus, LBNL and outside agencies. Advise research groups on optimal fund usage as well as on expenditure policy restrictions.

Funds Administration:
Facilitate pre-proposal preparation, prepare budgets for research proposals, and coordinate submission. Interpret and analyze agency proposal format, content, budgetary components and funding guidelines. Serve as liaison between Principal Investigator, Sponsored Projects Office, Contracts and Grants Accounting, Berkeley Regional Services (BRS), and agencies. Keep UCB and LBNL informed with regard to research personnel payroll status.

Reporting:
Prepares, analyzes, troubleshoots and reconciles multiple reports on behalf of the PI, this includes recharges, purchasing, funding and HR reports.

Personnel Management:
Arrange domestic and foreign travel itineraries and submit reimbursement requests. Work in tandem with Human Resources, the Visiting Scholar and Postdoctoral Affairs Program, and the Berkeley International Office to process visa and work permit applications for foreign researchers. Administer all activities concerning postdoctoral assistants, graduate research students, visiting professors/scholars and undergraduate researchers.

Material and Equipment Management:
Facilitate procurement of highly specialized and fabricated equipment and arrange purchases, repair, and maintenance of this equipment. Coordinate with University, College and LBNL equipment managers to conduct the annual equipment inventory for research groups. Provide internal documentation for removal or addition of equipment. Maintain records on all purchases. Track purchase orders, shop charges, and maintenance work on equipment and facilities. Obtain and renew maintenance contracts.
Required Qualifications
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with all levels of staff, faculty, and student body populations. Solid organizational skills and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes. Ability to use discretion, maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to evaluate and interpret complex financial policies and engage in wide range responsibilities.

Education/Training:
Bachelor's Degree and/or equivalent experience/training.
Preferred Qualifications
Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs. Knowledge of University rules, regulations, processes, protocols and procedures, or comparable knowledge. Knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques. Ability to understand applicable federal, state, local, sponsor and institutional regulations, policies, and guidelines.
Salary & Benefits
This is a 100% full-time (40 hours per week) non-exempt career position. Salary is commensurate with experience within the hourly range of: $28.45 (Step 3) - $37.24 (Step 15).
