Departmental Overview

The Departments of Rhetoric, Film and Media, and History of Art are three distinct and distinguished academic units in the Division of Arts and Humanities, located in Dwinelle Hall and in Doe Library. There are currently 42 permanent faculty and 12 permanent staff across the departments. In addition, each department appoints a number of temporary academic staff, including lecturers, adjuncts, and GSIs. History of Art facilities include dedicated classrooms and a Visual Resources Center, which houses a large multi-purpose academic space; Film and Media facilities include dedicated classroom space, a film and video collection, production equipment, and is a member of the Digital Media Lab consortium.

Responsibilities
    Consults and advises on appropriate technology to meet specific instructional activities, conferences, and film screenings. Provides consultative advice to faculty and staff on technical, media methods, techniques and equipment in order to enhance the quality of the presentation. Advises users on technical options. Plans and consults regarding the installation of new equipment and equipment upgrades. Analyzes operation, performance, and quality of audio/visual equipment in department classroom and conference space. Suggests long-term solutions for equipment needs. Responsible for research and proposals for new A/V equipment purchases for facilities. Stays informed on current technology involved with classroom sounds, video projection, film projection, control interfaces, and media formats. Performs research and implementation of cinema technologies including surround sound, acoustics, color calibration, and high-resolution imagery for optimum playback quality. Assists Media Lab Coordinator as needed with video production equipment reservations and checkout to students and faculty, when the Media Lab Coordinator is unavailable or unable to deliver equipment. Follows production equipment checkout policies as established by the Media Lab Coordinator. DML Coordinator and Media Technology Specialist will provide mutual backup. Maintains event information, course descriptions, and personnel updates on department websites. Manages external communications via social media platforms, websites, and other online strategies. Maintains and oversee inventory of all audio/visual equipment in classrooms and conference rooms of Rhetoric and Film departments. Coordinates reservations and checkout of A/V equipment. Maintains equipment performance and quality with minor and routine in-house repairs and calibration. Notifies manager of complex repair needs, suggests vendors, negotiates prices, and coordinates inter-departmental solutions with campus technology services. Oversees copier maintenance, building access (including card key access), office key inventory and distribution (including new key orders). Coordinates rental of departmental space to outside groups. Responsible for equipment purchasing, maintenance and repair, inventory, and security. Contacts facilities and vendors (e.g. Xerox) as necessary to report issues and arrange service. Acts as liaison with Classroom Central to report any classroom facilities problems and follows through to ensure problems have been resolved. Serves as department safety officer. Maintains emergency supply kit and keeps a current list of all faculty and staff, their office assignments, and contact information. Acts as primary technical support for department events and meetings. Acts as primary projectionist for department events and screenings when scheduled during work day; helps arrange for support outside regular hours. Provides training to operators (faculty, staff, students) for evening classes or special events. Conceptualizes, creates, and delivers workshops or tutorials as requested by manager and faculty for staff, faculty, and students with regard to A/V operation and presentation technologies, including standard software such as Powerpoint, Keynote, Quicktime, etc. Responsible for all Rhetoric and Film & Media media collections: DVDs, VHS tapes, films, laser discs, MP3 files. Maintain organization, perform necessary repairs, and coordinate reservation and checkout. Develop plans for digitizing media in outdated formats. Supervise work study students to support collection organization and checkout. Consult with faculty regarding collection development, research and order necessary films, coordinate possible sharing of collection with Moffitt Media Research Center and other campus entities.

Required Qualifications
    Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Thorough customer service and consultative skills to identify and implement required technology solutions. Thorough understanding of media production methods and equipment and ability to use this information to troubleshoot the most complex systems. Ability to assess campus or institutional needs for AV IT technology products and design services to meet those needs. Thorough understanding of post-production processes including internet-based media distribution solutions. Demonstrated effective interpersonal and communication skills. Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization. Knowledge of computer, media, and networking technology. Skills to determine priorities based on knowledge of work area. Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines. Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications
    Knowledge of intellectual property (IP) restrictions and skill to ensure that media meets IP requirements.

Salary & Benefits

This is a 100% full-time (40 hrs a week) non-exempt career position, which is paid hourly and eligible for full UC Benefits.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $32.09 - $50.00.
