Departmental Overview

Berkeley Psychology is home to a vibrant community of faculty, graduate students, and staff. Berkeley Psychology's pre-eminent faculty conduct ground- breaking and award-winning research in the fields of behavioral and systems neuroscience, clinical science, cognition, cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology, and social/personality psychology. Our faculty are recognized around the world as leaders in their fields, and are also award-winning teachers and mentors.

We study a wide range of questions about behavior, using many different methods, including behavioral, computational, developmental, social, and neural. We study the brain from systems to behavioral to cognitive to social neuroscience. We study development from infancy to late life and back; our data range from the individual to small groups to massive data streams and nested scales. We study basic science of behavior, cognition, personality, and emotion and its translation to mental illness, education, and policy. We study complex social systems and connectivity from the local to the global.

Responsibilities

Support participant recruitment and engagement efforts for the East Bay Financial Needs Study and LCD lab including:
Lead the recruitment of participants (including through in-person recruitment drives at local schools, clinics, day care centers, non-profit organizations, social services offices, etc.). Lead participant recruitment outreach efforts towards identifying community partners and recruitment locations. Distribute study materials to participants living in the East Bay/Oakland area. Meet with community partners to establish new relationships and maintain already established relationships. Carry out consent calls and communicate with participants through the life of the study. Train and manage approved researchers in recruitment and study protocols (with the support of the program manager). Prepare and share approved research dissemination materials with participants.
Track, manage, and analyze data for the LCD lab and East Bay Financial Needs Study and support the IRB approval process:
Maintain a database of local families who have consented to participate in research. Maintain participant records. Prepare/amend applications for human subjects review approval. Assist with data analysis and the preparation of research for publication.
Support management of the LCD lab
Purchase equipment for the lab and East Bay Financial Needs Study. Attend lab meetings.
Assist with programmatic tasks related to the PEP initiative, including communications and research dissemination, support for PEP-related workshops and events, budget management and financial tracking, and other CEGA-wide tasks.

Required Qualifications
Candidates should have a strong interest in language and cognitive development. Experience working directly with research participants, especially children, in an academic research environment. A general fluency with computer software, and strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (both oral and written). Experience with online survey platforms (e.g. Qualtrics). Strong financial and project management skills and familiarity with academic research administration. Self-directed, intrinsically motivated; proven capacity to manage work independently, multitask and be responsive to time-sensitive deadlines. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong and effective interpersonal skills in working with people and coworkers at all levels. Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality. Cultural sensitivity and demonstrated ability to work diplomatically with diverse constituencies. Highly coachable, anticipating and integrating guidance and direction. Must have reliable transportation or ability to secure timely transportation for travel to various sites throughout the San Francisco East Bay area. Travel expenses (e.g. gas mileage) will be fully reimbursed. Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma and two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; and knowledges and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
Preferred Qualifications
At least two years of coursework in experimental psychology, cognitive science, linguistics, or other relevant fields and/or equivalent experience/training. Experience working with marginalized or vulnerable populations. The strongest candidates will have experience with statistical software (e.g., R, Python), computer programming (e.g., Matlab) and web design (Javascript/HTML). Spanish Fluency.
Salary & Benefits

This is a 1-year non-exempt temporary position at 100% (40 hrs a week). This position is paid hourly and eligible for UC Benefits with the possibility of extension. Hourly pay is commensurate with experience within pre-approved steps up to $24.30 (Step 5).
