Position description

The Department of Pharmacology at the University of California, Davis seeks to fill a full-time Junior Specialist position in the Cardiovascular Research field. Junior Specialist positions are short-term, two-year maximum appointments based on the needs of the research project. The incumbent will devote 90% of their time to research and 10% to professional competence and public service, as described below.

Research (90%): Successful candidates will participate in laboratory studies. The incumbent will actively participate in creative activities, including research presentations and publications. General responsibilities also include active and significant participation in publishable research activities. The candidate will contribute to data collection, analysis, and putting together graphical representations of data for scholarly manuscripts as well as participating in writing, editing, and reviewing the manuscript for publication. Candidates will review relevant journal articles and participate in scientific discussions in both the lab setting and more formal venues such as the weekly journal club and lab meeting, the monthly departmental science in progress talks, and when appropriate local national and international scientific meetings such as Davis cardiovascular symposium.

The goal of the research is to investigate the synergistic effects of social stress and traffic-related air pollution on cardiovascular health in a rat model. The position will be based at the Davis campus with occasional work at the Caldecott tunnel exposure facility near Oakland. The candidate will assist the PI and support the laboratory research. Responsibilities of this position including assist the PI and a post-doctoral fellow with
* surgical implantation of cardiovascular monitors
* stress protocols
* laboratory husbandry of animals, including feeding and health checks
* collection, analysis, and interpretation of cardiovascular data
* necropsy and analysis of blood constituents
* order supplies and undertake other miscellaneous organizational tasks

Professional competence (5%): The candidate will participate in weekly discussions of relevant literature and undertake literature reviews pertinent to the work being conducted, attend weekly seminars/conferences, and other activities, as applicable within the Department of Pharmacology.

University and public service (5%): The candidate will contribute to the training and mentoring of other laboratory members and student interns on appropriate methods related to the work of the laboratory.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
  • BS or BA in animal science, biology or related field
  • Ability to work carefully and independently
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Familiarity with basic data collection and entry
  • Ability to identify and solve problems encountered in field or lab settings
  • Works well in a team and have good communication skills
  • Have driving experience with a current driver's license.
