Responsibilities
The UI/UX Designer, reporting directly to the Manager of Application Development, is responsible for crafting and leading design thinking processes for Academic Information Systems web applications, as well as providing leadership and guidance on visual design and user-experience. In collaboration with educational leadership, Academic Information Systems aims to provide superior technology and support for staff, students and faculty for the Schools of Health.
The UI/UX Designer will bring professional working experience, with knowledge in both visual communications design and user experience design methodology. This position will practice empathy-led design, grounding in & focusing on the needs and desires of target users in order to make design decisions. This position will bring experience building and using prototypes to test assumptions and collect feedback on a design direction. The UI/UX Designer will have strong visual, verbal, and written communication skills, and can communicate the value of design, and the thinking behind the work. This position will be able to tell compelling stories to translate thinking to designers and collaborators who don’t share fluency in design processes.
The UI/UX Designer understands the different stages of design such as research, prototyping, testing and refinement and knows when to apply different methodologies to move the team and project forward. They have experience closely collaborating with Business Systems Analysts. This position is highly collaborative, and maintains a mindset of curiosity and openness when working across teams and functions. This position thrives on complex challenges, and feels comfortable originating content autonomously and acting self-directed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • 5 years experience in user experience and design
  • Expertise in user experience, visual design, data / information visualization processes, technologies and techniques
  • Skills in diagramming, prototyping and using design tools.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Ability to provide a clear rationale for designs and strategies in a compelling, context-appropriate manner to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and analyze business needs, user requirements and technical constraints and identify ways in which software or web designs can support those needs.
  • Demonstrated presentation skills.
  • Proficiency in website programming languages such as HTML, PrimeNG and CSS3
  • Understanding of key website design principles
  • Ability to use client input to create functional, creative and user-friendly webpages
  • Ability to test and debug websites
  • Analytical and detail-oriented
  • Advanced problem-solving skills
  • Observant and able to remain focused on tasks for long periods of time
  • Proficient in UX Design Software at an enterprise level (Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, InVision, UXPin, Quartz or other visual design and wireframing tools). Experience creating and managing enterprise libraries and components is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of enterprise UI Design software (Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) and how to conceptualize, optimize and develop imagery for web development projects.
  • Team player and work with multiple team members to achieve daily, weekly, and monthly targets
  • Maintain an understanding of the latest Web applications and programming practices through education and self-study
  • Solid experience with cross-device responsive web development techniques, page speed optimization and debugging tools.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Background in web design/development highly preferred
  • Design Thinking training or Certification
  • Knowledge of web accessibility standards
  • Experience working in technology startups
  • Experience creating storyboards to illustrate user experiences
  • Experience presenting
  • Experience leading front-end development efforts for large projects
  • Experience with Javascript
  • Experience of building applications in healthcare and life sciences and can address 508, WCAG, and HIPAA compliance concerns
