Your Role on the Team
The School of Medicine at the University of California Irvine, has an opening for a Physician Assistant within the Primary Care Associates department. The UCI Primary Care Associates provide clinical services for UCI Health patients of all ages in a variety of settings and locations throughout Orange County, CA. Clinical sites include Costa Mesa, Laguna Hills, Newport Beach, Yorba Linda, Tustin, and Orange – with more to come.
Incumbents in accordance with standardized procedures conduct in-depth interviews with patients and/or family, construct comprehensive medical histories, perform initial and periodic physical examinations, evaluate patient behavior and explore patient's interpretation of health needs. Incumbents directly perform or order appropriate diagnostic studies and interpret finished results; develop and implement long and short-range treatment plans. Physician Assistants work in collaboration with other health care team members, consulting and referring as appropriate, but retain responsibility for the ongoing clinical management of the patient.
The position of Physician Assistant requires a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual. Under the supervision of an Associate physician and guided by the applicable policies and procedures, the Physician Assistant will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in the ambulatory or inpatient settings and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and referring physicians. A Physician Assistant is an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide advanced care in their area of specialization.
The physician assistant evaluates medical and functional statuses and provides treatment planning and interventions with a high degree of autonomy, exercising independent judgment and initiative in carrying out the nurse practitioner functions and in applying nursing values and ethics to complex situations.
This position may perform: Functions as appropriate to their “scope of practice” (In general, the “scope of practice” includes the management of chronic stable medical conditions, routine care, acute or critical care, and medical and surgical procedures per their approved standardized procedure). Familiarity with state statute for their licenses is necessary. Approved privileges are unique to each person and are unlikely to include ALL privileges. The PA may provide patient care in age groups based on educational preparation and at all Health licensed settings and affiliates. The PA has responsibility for the standards of care for their specified patient population and evidence self-direction and accountability both to quality of care and in the development of their role within all Health locations and affiliates. Advanced Practice Practitioners (APP) are required to be credentialed to practice and be privileged through Medical Staff to function in their clinical role. Credentialing and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. The PA is accountable to, evaluated, and provided feedback by the supervising/collaborating physician, physician designee(s) in the same clinical specialty, and the Administrative Manager if required.
We are seeking a highly competent, independent yet team-oriented individual who must be flexible to work various hours throughout all locations, including rotating weekends. Under the supervision of the Medical Director and guided by applicable policies and procedures, the Physician Assistant will participate in the comprehensive care of patients in ambulatory clinic settings and provide multi-disciplinary care coordination, treatment, education, monitoring, and communication with patients and physicians. The incumbent will independently provide expert medical care to UCI Health patients and functions within the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) scope of practice.

- Must possess the skill, knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of assigned duties.
- Ability to be trained in the use of specialized medical equipment and procedures.
- Demonstrates an understanding of and adheres to privacy, confidentiality, and security policies and procedures related to Protected Health Information (PHI) or other sensitive and personal information.
- Demonstrated experience in quality improvement to improve patient outcomes.
- Leadership skills; ability to motivate, inspire, communicate with faculty, residents, staff, and peers to maintain a professional, team-based approach in the care of patients.
- Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
- Evidence of completion of Controlled Substances Education Course that meets requirements pursuant to California Code of Regulations Sections 1399.610 and1399.612. PAs who have completed a one-time Controlled Substances Education Course may order or furnish a Schedule II drug pursuant to the Practice Agreement without patient-specific advance approval.
- Current, active, unrestricted California Physician Assistant license.
- Current and active DEA registration.
- National board certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) at the time of initial appointment.
- Current BLS certification.
- Active National Provider Identifier (NPI).
- Experience in providing and/or oversight of primary care.
Special Conditions:
- Ability to obtain UCIMC Allied Health Professional Privileges prior to hire.
- .Adhere to departmental policies, procedures, and objectives while in compliance of all UC policies and procedures. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with all state and federal privacy laws
