Data Scientist

We are seeking a passionate and ambitious Data Scientist to join our Information Technology Solutions (ITS) Data & Analytics team. As our Data Scientist, you will play a dual role by devoting 50% of your time to supporting the Academic Personnel Office (APO). Here, you will focus on data science needs related to faculty performance, tenure, review standards, and diverse reporting requirements. Your duties will include understanding the implications of data and the processes that generate it, enhancing data quality, improving data workflow efficiency, and collaborating on the design and construction of data dashboards.

The remaining 50% of your time will be spent on campus-wide data science initiatives under the guidance of ITS. This aspect of your role will allow you to delve into areas such as student success metrics, financial systems, and human resources systems.

This is a 3 YEAR CONTRACT position. Should additional funding be made available in the future, the contract could be extended or the position converted to a permanent career position. This position is classified as predominantly remote with occasional visits to campus as needed. Working hours will be based on Pacific Standard Time (PST).

The full salary range for the Data Scientist is $93,400 - $177,200 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is UP TO $130,000 annually. UCR bases salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, UCR is unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

As a condition of employment, you will be required to comply with the University of California SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) Vaccination Program Policy. All Covered Individuals under the policy must provide proof of "Up to Date" Vaccination or, if applicable, submit a request for Exception (based on Medical Exemption, Disability, and/or Religious Objection) or Deferral (based on pregnancy) no later than the applicable deadline. For new University of California employees, the applicable deadline is ten weeks after their first date of employment.

Education Requirements

Advanced knowledge of data management systems, practices and standards.

Experience in data integration and the specification of data services.
Demonstrated advanced problem-solving skills. Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
Advanced analytical and design skills, including the ability to abstract information requirements from real-world processes to understand information flows in computer systems.
Familiarity with highly complex logical data design and data mapping or data conversion.
Proficiency in data analysis tools and languages such as SQL, Python, and R.
Experience building ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) and ELT (Extract, Load, Transform) pipelines with tools such as Dbt, Dataform, Dataprep, etc. in a cloud environment (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
Familiarity with data warehouse products in a cloud environment such as Google BigQuery, Redshift, Snowflake, etc.
Experience building data visualizations, reports, and/or presentations within a tool like Looker, Tableau, PowerBI, matplotlib, etc.

Understanding of academic and institutional data within a higher education environment.
