Job Summary
Involves providing non-clinical support, guidance and assistance for patients and families as they navigate through complex healthcare environments. Primary goals are to increase patient satisfaction, and to optimize care and outcomes. Acts as a communication liaison to understand the patient's non-clinical individual needs, desires, and concerns. Guides the patient and family to a broad range of services, amenities, and information to promote healing and ensure satisfaction with the patient care experience.
Applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments / projects / tasks of moderate scope and complexity; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action.
Functions as a non-clinical resource and liaison for patients and their families. Provides individualized support throughout the hospital stay and / or clinic visits. Develops expertise in the unit or clinic operations and systems to resolve issues across departments.
Multisite Implementation of COMPRENDO (ChildhOod Malignancy Peer REsearch NavigatiOn) to improve participation of Hispanic children in cancer treatment clinical trials.
This research study is being conducted to improve the informed consent process for Hispanic families of children and adolescents with cancer and the services we provide.
The Parent Peer Research Navigator provides services to Oncology parents as part of a research study. They will meet one-on-one with parents of children with cancer to provide information and decision-making tools to help parents better understand treatment clinical trials. They build strong relationships with parents of children with cancer to improve their experience and understanding of the consenting process for pediatric cancer treatment. Parent Peer Research Navigators will meet with parents to provide information and understanding of the difference between Standard of Care and Treatment Clinical Trials, as well as helping parents know what questions to ask their child's oncology doctor. Peer Research Navigators are committed to removing parents' barriers to child's treatment informed consent, empowering parents following a script supported by culture, language and health-literacy concordant handouts and graphic materials, decision aids, and short video-clips. Peer Research Navigators also provide support with decision-making and answer parents' questions and clarifying unfamiliar terms that the oncology doctor will mention to them during the child's treatment informed consent discussion. Parent Peer Research Navigators work closely with the healthcare team, which may include doctors, nurses, social workers, and other clinical staff to support parents and patients. This position participates as a member of the healthcare team in a research role. The Parent Peer Research Navigator will be responsible for meeting with parents of pediatric cancer patients to deliver the COMPRENDO intervention. They will meet with parents in 2 - 4 sessions to provide guidance and information on pediatric cancer treatment clinical trials, to listen to parents' concerns and work with parents on how to recognize and overcome barriers. Parent Peer Research Navigators will attend the informed consent discussion with the parent and oncology doctor to help facilitate questions.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.
For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.
