Academic Program Officer

We seek a highly motivated and collaborative Academic Program Officer to manage a large academic research program related to lupus at UCSF and to represent the program to outside organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control, Lupus Foundations and others.

The Academic Program Officer must have some experience in management, analytical and administrative support for research projects. Expertise in longitudinal cohort studies, which is a cornerstone of the California Lupus Epidemiology Study (CLUES) is required. CLUES is now in its 8th year and is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through a U01 mechanism. The goals of CLUES are to recruit and follow a population-based, longitudinal population of individuals with lupus, with a unique balance of African-American, Asian, and Hispanic individuals, to maintain a state-of-the-art clinical data repository that includes longitudinal survey data on this cohort that aims to define the epidemiology and outcomes of the disease, and to perform high impact research investigations that advance our understanding of racial, ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in lupus. The Academic Program Officer will also help manage a number of ancillary studies that involve CLUES participants, including studies related to the impact of sleep and physical activity on lupus outcomes and studies that rely on biological specimen collections that enable innovative translational research studies that advance our understanding of the biology of lupus.

The Academic Program Officer will directly supervise multiple staff, including five clinical research coordinators, a database manager, and administrative staff working on the CLUES project. The Academic Program Officer will also coordinate events, trainings and collaborations with an additional dozen staff working on projects in the area of lupus. The clinical research coordinators are responsible for consenting study participants, conducting longitudinal interviews, and collecting biospecimens. The Academic Program Officer will devise agendas for investigator and staff meetings, submit progress reports to the CDC, review budgets, participate in discussions about scientific direction, assist in hiring and retaining study staff, and perform other operational tasks related to the study including managing the CLUES web page. In addition, the Academic Program Officer will be responsible for devising, in collaboration with the investigators, the scientific content of CLUES participant surveys, which include a range of patient-reported outcomes such as those from the NIH Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement System (PROMIS), information on lupus disease manifestations and treatments, health care utilization, and a large number of social determinants of health. The CLUES study is conducted in 3 languages (English, Spanish and Chinese) and clinical research coordinators are fluent in these languages. The Academic Program Officer will work closely with the CLUES database manager to ensure the scientific rigor of survey items, including attention to response rates, item distribution, patterns of missingness, and other issues that are relevant to ensuring the highest quality data. In addition, the Academic Program Officer will work with rheumatologists at UCSF and throughout San Francisco to enhance study recruitment, and will work with investigators to produce a yearly newsletter to keep study participants abreast of study progress.

This position will also entail close collaboration with national organizations, such as the CDC, Lupus Research Alliance, and Lupus Foundation of America, with external researchers, and with clinical and administrative stakeholders in lupus throughout the country. The Academic Program Officer will be encouraged to take advantage of training and learning opportunities within the UCSF Training in Clinical Research Program, the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, the UCSF Center for Healthcare Value, and other related entities.

The Academic Program Officer will oversee all administrative operations, finance, human resources and facilities for program. The Academic Program Officer will design and develop major program components, and administer the full range of the program's operational requirements. The Academic Program Officer will develop and organize conferences and other public forums.

This position has significant advantages and growth opportunities in research. First, through their work, the Academic Program Officer will gain tremendous insight into the research, clinical, administrative, and educational functions of a large lupus center, and specifically have opportunities to contribute to research that partners with vulnerable population of people with lupus who have historically suffered from significant health disparities. In addition, our faculty publishes its work in peer-reviewed journals and would provide the Academic Program Officer with authorship on publications, should they meet standard contribution criteria. Finally, the work of the Academic Program Officer contributes to improving the clinical care and outcomes for people with lupus across the United States.

The UCSF Division of Rheumatology is one of the oldest and most respected rheumatology groups in the United States. For decades, it has distinguished itself as a leader in clinical research that aims to improve health outcomes and to reduce health disparities for people with rheumatologic conditions. Our physicians deliver expert care at San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF Health, and the San Francisco Veterans Affairs hospital. The Division runs several clinical practices, conducts basic and clinical research, and educates medical students, residents, clinical fellows and postdoctoral scholars. In addition, the Division has significant and complex financial and administrative relationships with the Department of Medicine (DOM) and the UCSF Medical Center, as well as large patient care programs, large clinical, federal, and privately supported research programs and 7 faculty laboratories. The Division has a sponsored research portfolio of $10 million per year including over 40 sponsored awards, as well as at the Russell Engleman Rheumatology Research Center which has an endowment principal of $30 million and generates income of $1.3 million per year in support of its clinical, research, training, and service missions. The the Academic Program Officer would become an integral part of the UCSF Rheumatology Qualify and Informatics Lab, joining an experienced group of scholars including rheumatology clinical and research faculty, epidemiologists, biostatisticians, data scientists and clinical research coordinators.
