The Clinical Nurse Specialist is a clinical leader, and expert provider that delivers direct patient care in the Radiation Oncology clinics at UCSF Medical Center, specifically in the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. The CNS is experienced and highly skilled with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the Radiation Oncology scope and standards of practice, the major treatment modalities, symptom management, supportive care, and patient education. At this operational level, the CNS proactively utilizes the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide safe, compassionate care; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with more complex needs. They'll partner with the referring providers, inpatient & outpatient APPs and RNs, Nurse Managers, Nursing Professional Development Specialists and others in clinical and admin practice areas. The CNS utilizes an interdisciplinary approach across the continuum of care with adherence to National Patient Safety Goals set forth by regulatory requirements. The CNS is recognized and utilized as a clinical resource and demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the unit and the organization.

Department Description

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center is an accredited National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. The NCI-Designation recognizes the scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of the research in basic, clinical and population science. As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, we demonstrate the added depth and breadth of research as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas. The clinical services encompass adult and pediatric tumors across three campuses as well as regional satellite locations. The clinical cancer program is one of the largest clinical services at UCSF Medical Center and encompasses roughly 230 non-physician FTEs, 100 cost center, and dozens of grant and philanthropic funding sources. At the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center we are truly pioneering care and leaders in all areas of cancer clinical care and research. We are routinely voted a top 10 program by U.S. News and World Report.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in nursing or related area, and / or equivalent combination of experience / training.
  • Bachelors degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum five (5) years of recent clinical RN experience.
  • Minimum one (1) year of recent Radiation Oncology RN experience.
  • Minimum one to three (1-3) years Oncology RN experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, to include diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice and patient / family educational consulting and resources.
  • Advanced knowledge of methodology for conducting evidence-based research, data collection, analysis, and reporting.
  • Advanced critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess highly-complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, employees, and outside agencies as required.
  • Advanced skills in written and verbal communications, with the ability to convey complex and / or sensitive information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities essential to successfully perform the duties of the assigned position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Outpatient nursing experience.
  • Radiation Oncology certificate completion
  • Oncology certification

License/Certification

  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • Current American Heart Association CPR certification
