Position description

The Department of Economics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, invites applications for a position in the area of the economics of inequality. The ideal candidate will have an active research agenda that engages in the economic study of inequality, an outstanding publication record as demonstrated through peer reviewed journal articles and/or books, and demonstrated excellence in teaching, student mentorship, and professional and public service. The ideal candidate also can contribute teaching and mentoring excellence to serve our graduate program and our large and highly diverse undergraduate major. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate to the position.

In 2023-24, UC Santa Barbara departments are partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-century African American mathematician, astronomer, antiracist, engineer, ecologist, and peace advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, the Banneker Initiative proposes to hire scientists, engineers and interdisciplinary scholars as UCSB faculty, whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary work shares Banneker's concerns as an African American scientist, especially his desire to advance scientific and engineering knowledge for the public good.

With the goal of creating a diverse community around such concerns, applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities, including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success Program, proposal writing training, and seed grants.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must currently have a PhD in economics or a closely related discipline.

Preferred qualifications

Currently holds a tenure-track or tenured position.

Applicant's research and scholarship should focus on the economics of inequality. The economics of inequality may be studied through the lens of any number of fields of economics, including applied microeconomics and macroeconomics.
-Active research program as demonstrated through publications in peer reviewed journals and/or books.
-We are particularly interested in candidates with outstanding records of scholarly achievement, as well as those with research and teaching experience that can add to the department's rich theoretical, analytical, and methodological diversity.
-Demonstrated excellence in teaching and student mentoring (demonstrable via letters of reference, qualitative and/or quantitative evaluations (if available), past record of student mentoring, and/or via interview process).
-Contributions to diversity and equal opportunity as demonstrated by commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning community, including evidence of engagement in relevant activities promoting equity, inclusion, and diversity, as applicable.
