Brief Summary of Duties
Under the general direction of the Linux & Virtualization Engineering Manager, enhances and optimizes the enterprise infrastructure, including storage, networks, and systems supporting digital programs, research, and broad areas such as the Library; provides technical expertise, architectural leadership and knowledge of best practices; and ensures that critical applications are designed and optimized for appropriate availability and disaster recovery. Drives scope definition, requirements analysis, functional and technical design, infrastructure as code (IaC) use, application build pipelines, product configuration, unit testing, and production deployment; ensures delivered solutions meet/perform to technical and functional/non-functional requirements; provides technical expertise in the diagnosis and resolution of cloud-related issues, including the determination and provision of workaround solutions or escalation to service owners. Provides tactical planning around current and future technologies within the cloud space; participates on campus teams to further our holistic cloud vision and strategy across multiple UCSB campus groups; serves as a subject matter expert to UCSB Library for cloud end-to-end architecture, including AWS (Amazon Web Services) and future providers, networking, provisioning, security, and management; assists in developing solutions architecture and evaluates architectural alternatives for private, public, and hybrid cloud models, including IaaS, PaaS, and other cloud services.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent experience and/or training.

Responsibilities
Cloud Strategy, 30%
Collaborates with Product Owners and Enterprise Architects to understand requirements for architecture. Collaborates with cross-functional roles to communicate and align development efforts with Architecture Roadmap. Performs root cause analysis, technology evaluation, and design spikes to define architecture supporting high-quality resilient software. Proposes phased-approach solutions to projects or system architecture. Architects solutions in AWS that meet specified performance and security expectations; builds detailed cost models for the solution including one-time costs for professional services and ongoing costs for AWS Service consumption, and Library's managed services. Drives the development and implementation of key new cloud technologies; and coordinates with business and IT leadership to ensure that the services remain aligned with business, instruction, and research objectives
Cloud Architecture and Operations, 40%
Provides guidance and helps implement industry standards and best practices, such as Infrastructure as Code. Works with a full-stack team to define and implement logical and physical architecture. Provides development and implementation for architecture design concepts (architect/developer). Defines domain boundaries, API functionality, and data structure to promote clean separation of responsibility in service-oriented architecture (SOA) / micro services environment. Identifies coding patterns and anti-patterns and enforces implementation of the patterns through code reviews; and develops technical requirements and assesses if there is a suitable solution to varied workflow needs.
Cloud Adoption, 20%
Promotes improvements in DevOps, including version control, continuous integration, project build and test automation, to maximize development and operations team's efficiency. Collaborates with campus and UC system-wide projects, and other Solutions Architect peers to develop and deploy solutions; specifies the deliverables and timeline for implementing projects by writing the statements of work (SOW) for the project, application, or service(s). Assists stakeholders with developing a cloud strategy that meets their requirements. Educates and assists other teams to pilot and implement Cloud architecture standards; and collaborates with the service delivery teams to ensure the services are delivered as specified in the statements of work and as required to meet stakeholder's outcome objectives.
Miscellaneous, 10%
Documents the architecture (both up-front design and post-release as-built), exhibits and maintains state-of-the-art technical mastery over the variegated relationships between hardware, operating systems, and application software; and performs other duties as assigned (training, etc.).
