Working Days and Hours: M-F; 8:00am - 5:00pm, occasional nights and weekends

Brief Summary of Job Duties:

The Piano Technician performs the full range of Tuner/Technician duties associated with the tuning, regulating, voicing, repair, adjustments, rebuilding and renovation of grand and upright pianos, harpsichords and other keyboard instruments. Oversees the Instrument Maintenance Shop operations including inventory and maintenance records of all Music Department Instruments. Manages the department's instruments. Assists in productions and operations as a member of the Production Team.

Required Qualifications:

  • 4-6 years Piano tuning.
  • 1-3 years Piano maintenance.
  • High School Diploma, or a General Education Diploma and four years of experience in all phases of piano technology including at least two years of experience in the renovation and rebuilding of pianos; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of tuning for musical productions and live performances.
  • Solid ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure of deadlines, with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to work effectively and cooperatively as a staff team member.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid knowledge of MS Word and Excel.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and/or training.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Flexible/variable hours and work days totaling 40 hours a week to accommodate department's performance and rehearsal schedule. Occasional night and weekend work hours.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

65% Piano Tuning - Tunes, voices and regulates instruments to specifications desired by the faculty. Repairs soundboards, bridges, pinblocks, restrings plates, rebuilding and/or adjust damper assemblies, pedal lyre assemblies, key frames and keys.

15% Instrument Management - Oversees the inventory, maintenance, repair, and replacement for all departmentally-owned instruments. Keeps an accurate inventory along with maintenance and repair records. Estimates and submits for recommendation, necessary labor and material costs for repair and renovation of all department instruments & keyboards, including pianos (acoustic and electric), harpsichords, organs, celeste and other various instruments.

10% Maintenance Shop Management - Manages the Instrument Maintenance Shop which includes responsibilities for shop and tool safety and confirming with the requirements of OSCHA and other agencies. Handles administrative tasks in relation to other job duties such as procurement of parts & supplies, recordkeeping and retention, planning & organization, tracking of expenses, and other administrative functions.

10% Event/Production Management & Operations - As a part of the Production Team, assists in the logistics, preparation, and execution of departmental events, productions, and performances. Supervises or assists in the relocation and transportation of instruments, staging and preparation for performances and other events. Provides oversight and training to team members on proper transportation and handling methods
