The Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History supports natural history education and research opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and the greater Santa Cruz community. The Norris Center supports natural history learning by curating important natural history collections, teaching field-based classes, supporting hands-on internships, strengthening connections among disciplines - especially art and science, mentoring students to be future environmental leaders and teachers, and building lasting communities and professional networks.

JOB SUMMARY
At the Kenneth S. Norris Center for Natural History, the Art/Science Program Director works under the Administrative Director to manage the Art-Science programming at the Norris Center, including facilitating the Norris Center Art-Science Residency Program, organizing community nature art workshops, and community events and exhibits.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $24,600 - $28,360 / Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Manages the Art-Science Residency program, including: revising and circulating the art science residency call, selecting students to participate in residency projects each year, advising and communicating with artists and scientists throughout the residency, collecting and organizing documentation of final residency products, circulating final feedback survey to participants and arranging for payment for each artist.
20% - Manages public art-science events and exhibitions, including: envisioning, planning, constructing and implementing large events open to the campus and greater Santa Cruz community.
15% - Supervises undergraduate interns helping with any Norris Center Art-Science programming.
15% - Manages community art workshops, including: planning, scheduling and publicizing periodic workshops; hiring and paying artists; and soliciting feedback from participants to help improve the program.
10% - In consultation with the Norris Center Administrative Director and Faculty Director, coordinates all Norris Center art-science programming, including the art-science residency program, community art workshops, public events and student project/internship opportunities.
5% - Facilitates art-science collaborations with other UCSC and community organizations.
5% - Manages the art-science section of the Norris Center website, including publicizing programs, events, workshop registration, and project summaries.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelors degree in biology, art, and / or related field.
- Thorough project management skills.
- Ability to make sound judgments / decisions.
- Strong verbal, interpersonal, and presentation communication skills.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Experience planning and managing public art / science (or related) events and exhibitions.
- Experience managing others, in particular undergraduate students.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Advanced degree or certificate in biology, art, and / or related field.
- Thorough knowledge of emerging educational technologies and their application within museum education programming.
- Working knowledge of promotional and marketing techniques for museum educational programming.
- Thorough knowledge of budget tracking and analysis strategies.
- Experience working to create collaborative art / science projects with teams of artists and scientists.
- Background in website design and management.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
- Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
- Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Ability to work a variable schedule.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
- Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
