JOB SUMMARY

UC Santa Cruz Online Education is a dynamic team of staff and instructors who are dedicated to creating educational experiences that prioritize equity and access in an environment that encourages all students to build on their experiences and grow as individuals and members of society. The team develops open educational content through massive open online courses (MOOCs) and public-facing resources such as instructional innovations or tools, and routinely supports campus-wide digital projects that elevate the diverse faculty and student bodies. The Assistant Director for Open Education and Digital Engagement Projects is a champion for open educational content and manages these projects from inception to completion while applying principles of instructional design to positively influence the student experience by emphasizing equity and access. The position uses skills in multimedia development, and performance direction as an experienced professional to help shape curricular content into coherent instructional modules that employ multimedia and a variety of interactive, web-based tools aimed at encouraging the engagement of students and other learners in knowledge acquisition. This position demonstrates a high degree of collaboration, political astuteness and diplomacy, as well as engages in the analysis of technical and instructional issues while providing creative and thoughtful solutions. The Assistant Director for Open Education and Digital Engagement Projects works closely with the unit director on strategic initiatives for open educational content, as well as with the Online Education staff as thought partners, creative allies, and for content review and testing.

Salary Information: Salary Range: $60,000 - $83,400/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

50% - Course Design and Development
  • In partnership with faculty, applies principles of instructional design to the development of open educational content.
  • In partnership with faculty, devises innovative and imaginative approaches to the form and function of open educational content.
  • Works in a collaborative manner with others in a diverse environment and at all levels in the organization to prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis, and develop recommendations.
  • Actively seeks out knowledge of new and emerging learning technologies, as well as developing competency in existing learning technologies, in support of projects.
  • As the lead, and in collaboration with Online Education staff, engages in the review and testing of projects (work products) prior to release.
  • As the lead, and in collaboration with Online Education staff, carefully reviews user experience of projects and routinely makes improvements.
  • In collaboration with Online Education staff, ensures that open educational content is accessible.


30% - Planning, Communications, and Outreach
  • In partnership with the director of Online Education, does outreach to engage with and generate interest among UCSC faculty in open educational content, including massive open online courses (MOOCs).
  • Champion for the development of public-facing and low- or no-cost education.
  • Is the primary point of contact for faculty in the development of Online Education's open educational projects.
  • Is thoughtful and politically astute in communications with faculty, students, staff and industry partners.
  • Is the primary point of contact for partner relationships involving open educational content.
  • In partnership with the director of Online Education, strategically plans, composes, and releases all marketing and communications related to Online Education's open educational projects.

20% - Project Management
  • Manages all aspects of open educational projects from inception and through design, development, and launch.
  • Recruits, hires, mentors, supports, and supervises student employees (undergraduate and graduate) to assist in the development of projects.
  • As needed, contracts with vendors such as videographers, musicians, visual artists, etc., on the development of projects.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and / or equivalent experience and / or training.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and in partnership with instructors to develop engaging educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large-scale digital projects (or courses) from inception to completion while maintaining a high degree of attention to detail and adherence to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated political acumen in conduct and communications with instructors, administrators, students and staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to use creativity and imaginative thinking to be influential in the design of educational experiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support people from a wide range of experiences and backgrounds, including those from currently marginalized and historically underrepresented groups.
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including backward design, learning outcomes and assessment design and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, active learning and project-based learning.
  • Thorough knowledge of the instructional tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
  • Thorough knowledge of applying adult learning theories and educational methodologies, particularly as related to learners in massive open online courses.
  • Knowledge to conduct appropriate job and task analyses in the context of instructional design of technical or specialized educational training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Masters or terminal degree in a related area
  • Demonstrated success with marketing and communications related to educational experiences.
  • Experience with providing artistic direction for digital projects or media.
  • Experience with principles of and tools for visual design of digital projects or media.
  • Experience with operating cameras and editing visual media.
  • Thorough knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
