JOB SUMMARY

The Institute of Marine Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz invites applications for the position of Field Researcher 3 in Marine Mammal Biology. Under the direction of Drs. Rachel Holser and Daniel Costa, the researcher will be responsible for assisting with research on physiological and behavioral responses of northern elephant seals to both natural and anthropogenic disturbance. The individual will be responsible for assisting with field work, processing tissue samples, organizing and analyzing data, helping train undergraduate volunteers and incoming graduate students, and managing supplies and equipment. The researcher must have experience with elephant seal flipper tag resighting, capture and sedation, instrumentation, and tissue sampling. Experience with R, Matlab, SAS, and/or JMP strongly preferred.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Salary Information: Salary Range: $60,000 - $74,000/year. Proportionate to time worked. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES

65% - Field Support
  • Assists with all aspects of ongoing field research activities and interfaces with the public, university classes, State Parks staff, and media as needed.
  • Assists in training undergraduate student volunteers and graduate students.
  • Contacts agencies and research partners as needed to coordinate planning.

10% - Laboratory Support
  • Ensures instrumentation, infrastructure and required field research commodities and other materials support research goals.
  • Processes and analyzes tissue samples.

10% - Research
  • Conducts background research for briefs and presentations. Provides research and writing support to grant proposals, meeting summaries and reports.
  • Analyzes data and provides input to reports, manuscripts, and presentations.

10% - Data Management
  • Enters, collates, and conducts quality control on data collected in the field.

5% - Training
  • Participates in training activities on research methods.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Two years of relevant research experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of safety, legal, cultural and regulatory requirements relative to field research responsibility.
  • Thorough knowledge of research discipline, principles, concepts, analysis and / or operations being conducted at field / remote sites.
  • Proven ability to work independently and with a team, and to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills with research partners and project team members.
  • Understanding of basic laboratory risks and safety procedures.
  • Experience with elephant seal flipper tag resighting, capture and sedation, instrumentation, and tissue sampling.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training preferred.
  • Strong research and analytical skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of local customs and operations at field / remote sites.
  • Proven ability to work in ambiguous conditions and take relevant responsible action as required.
  • Experience processing various tissue samples.
  • Experience with R, Matlab, SAS, and/or JMP.


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • Ability to perform essential physical job functions.
  • Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
  • Ability to walk to and work in remote areas with rugged terrain, heavy brush, biting and stinging insects, bears and mountain lions.
  • Poison Oak is present. Incumbent must be willing to take the measures required to work in contact with and cut/remove poison oak.
  • Ability to work in conditions of variable temperature/weather with possible exposure to strong, unpleasant odors, high levels of noise and vibrations, and exposure to dust and allergens.
  • The ability to ascend/descend ladders with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to safely perform the physical requirements necessary in storing and moving materials. The ability to lift light to moderate objects up to 40 lbs., with or without accommodation.
  • Will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours as necessary.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to work safely in areas where hazardous materials are present or stored.
  • Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
  • Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Will be required to wear a University provided uniform.
