Position overview
Position title: Junior Specialist in Environmental Health
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after the initial review of applications.

Position duration: Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.

Position Description


The Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position Junior Specialist in Environmental Health. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Dr. Raquel Chamorro-Garcia and Associate Researcher Dr. Carlos Diaz-Castillo, the junior specialist will contribute to a research program on the impact of tobacco products in metabolic diseases and multigenerational epigenetic inheritance. Duties will include performing flow cytometry, library preparation for next-generation DNA sequencing, and mouse colony maintenance (treatment with chemicals, breeding, weighing, and record keeping). The candidate will also make contributions to lab management by ordering equipment and supplies, generating reagents, and ensuring lab compliance with safety and animal welfare regulations. The junior specialist will be expected to be part of an inclusive and supportive team of students, staff, and faculty, and stay up to date on important scientific developments in the field of environmental health research.

Applicants with any or all of the following preferred qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: basic molecular biology methods; mouse handling and dissection; and generation and analysis of sequencing datasets (using Linux command line or R).

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
B.S. (or an equivalent foreign degree) in biological sciences, biochemistry, or a related field and a minimum of 6 months' full-time or 12 months' part-time research experience (while obtaining B.S. or post-degree).
