Position overview
Position title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Bioelectronics for Tissue Regeneration (BETR)
Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individuals Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $70,000.

Percent time: Full-time (100%)

Anticipated start: As soon as possible after initial review of the applications. Ph.D. must be in hand at time of the initial appointment.

Position duration: Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time and the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individuals postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

Position Description


The Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral research position. Under the direction of Marcella M. Gomez, the postdoctoral researcher will join an ongoing research effort on Bioelectronics for Tissue Regeneration (BETR) funded by Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA). This is a highly dynamic and collaborative project aimed at accelerating wound closure. This project integrates the fields of biology, bioelectronics, electrical engineering, computer science, and applied mathematics. This is a two-year appointment subject to renewal based on performance evaluation and funding availability.

Job duties: Develop and refine feedback control algorithms informed only by sparse data and qualitative models to be integrated into hardware and implemented in vivo as part of our groups ongoing research on intelligent band aid. The work is highly collaborative and requires in person presence, ongoing conversations, regular meetings, and monthly reporting.

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing needs.
  • Interest and passion for working with graduate students.
  • Experience in machine learning (Deep Reinforcement Learning, in particular).
  • Ability to work in large teams with team members from a broad range of disciplines.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in biotechnology, biology/biomedical sciences-other, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, computational biology or a related field.
