ABOUT UC SANTA CRUZ

UC Santa Cruz is a public university like no other in California, combining the experience of a small, liberal arts college with the depth and rigor of a major research university. It's known as an unconventional place where innovation and experimentation is part of the campus's DNA. That playful, bold spirit still thrives today, all on a campus renowned as among the most beautiful in the world.

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Part of the Office of Research, UCSC's Office of Research Development (RD) is a small, service-oriented team that works collaboratively with internal and external partners to advance the UCSC research enterprise through increased funding, visibility, and engagement. RD professionals help individual faculty members, teams of researchers, and administrators attract extramural research funding, build relationships, and develop and implement strategies that increase institutional competitiveness. Specifically, RD staff support researchers across UCSC in developing concepts, funding strategies, and teams; identifying and evaluating funding opportunities; and preparing competitive proposals. The RD team works together to promote cross-campus research communications; facilitates collaborations; conducts workshops and training; and develops resources to streamline proposal development. Additionally, the Office of Research Development supports initiatives such as seed funding, symposia, program officer visits, and structured programs focused on high-priority opportunities.

JOB SUMMARY

The Research Development Specialist will support faculty pursuing grants in the biomedical sciences. Biomedical science at UCSC spans two academic divisions: Physical and Biological Sciences and Baskin Engineering. The Research Development Specialist serves as a liaison to both divisions.

Support for biomedical researchers will reflect divisional and departmental priorities and may include direct outreach to individuals, teams, and divisional leadership; portfolio analyses; opportunity scouting and evaluation; assistance with strategy development and teaming; and training on various aspects of finding and securing funding, including grant writing. Proposal support may include assisting with proposal planning, coordination, and management; advising on concept and structure; contributing to non-research components such as broader impacts and management plans; editing proposal documents; and reviewing proposal packages for clarity, consistency, accuracy, and competetiveness. Depending on the scope and context of extramural funding opportunities, Research Development Specialists may collaborate to support large cross-divisional or multi-institutional initiatives, or training and education grants. Research Development Specialists work as part of a team to provide consistent support for UCSC researchers across divisions and are expected to contribute to campus-wide RD programs, resource and process development, and strategic planning. The Specialist may be asked to lead specific programs relevant to their domain, interests, and skills.
