In consultation with a faculty advisory committee, and under general direction of the Department Manager, the Health Sciences Internship Coordinator has primary responsibility for the maintenance of the education standards and effective functioning of the Health Sciences Internship Program.

JOB SUMMARY
Using skills as a seasoned, experienced student services professional, provides the full range of student services within an academic department. Independently advises students and resolves student services-related issues on the full range of academic issues inherent within the organization. Advises faculty and management on a variety of student issues. Works with the department's management to recommend changes to policies, practices, and procedures. Guidance on issues requiring in-depth knowledge of specialized programs is provided by offices specializing in those fields, e.g., the financial aid office, graduate division, student learning center, or by the dean and faculty of the department. May administer funds for student programs.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
Salary Information: $58,500 - $70,900/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES
30% - Internship Development and Agency Outreach/PR
- Researches opportunities for student internships related to human health in hospitals, clinics, and private and public agencies.
- Initiates and maintains relationships with potential internship providers, assists providers in understanding academic program requirements, and determines appropriateness of internship opportunities.
- Develops and makes presentations to health care directors, administrators and providers in order to solicit internship opportunities.
- Develops and implements policies, negotiates terms, and formulates clinical agreements/affiliations enabling UCSC undergraduate students to shadow physicians and medical professionals in off-campus agencies/institutions: liaises with campus risk manager and campus counsel as needed to understand current campus policy and facilitate the agreements.
- Develops short and long-term strategies for continued management of the program within the limit of the community's Medical/Clinical opportunities. Represents the University as a board member of the Cruzmed Foundation, a charitable arm of the County Medical Society.
35% - Student Assessment and Progress
- Serves as primary contact for students seeking internships.
- Assesses academic interests, career goals, and suggests appropriate internship opportunities.
- Assists students in preparing for off-campus learning experiences.
- Answers questions and resolves problems.
- Creates and maintains student files.
- Analyzes student qualifications and internships to optimize the limited community placements among the participating student cohort each quarter.
- Monitors student progress during the internship through personal, email or phone contact and site visits.
- Serves as departmental representative for signature authority, independently determining which issues require faculty involvement.
- Follows up with students at risk of not meeting their internship commitment. Contacts faculty sponsors, as needed.
- Processes (review, store, transmit) PII (Personal Identity Information) under California State Law for students each quarter as part of their clearance process required for participate in clinical, medical settings, as well as the requirements of each health organization. Handles background checks and drug testing results.
15% - Course Enrollment Management
- Performs full management of the required BIOL 189 3-unit internship course that is offered every quarter (including Summer), and is taken by approximately 100 students each year. Recommends curricular changes to faculty. Screens and places students, monitors placements, conducts site visits, reads and evaluates the submitted work and issues the grades. Selects and secures guest speakers for the course.
- Maintains educational standards of internship learning experiences in accordance with policies set by the department.
- Advises faculty on development of field components for courses, group internships, senior internships, and special programs. Recommends curricular changes to Chair and department curriculum committee.
- Serves as a campus resource on the health sciences major and on the health sciences in general.
10% - Learning Support Program
- Establishes a learning support program by developing student enrichment activities.
- Identifies and invites guest speakers from the medical community and related areas.
- Acquires current information about appropriate career fields and employment requirements, trends, and salaries.
- Refers students to workshops, co-curricular programs and other resources to support their career interests.
- Acts as advisor to relevant student groups and clubs.
5% - Data Collection
- Collects participant and provider data, and develops and maintains database of internships.
- Designs and produces reports from the database.
- Analyzes reports and modifies the program to ensure that students meet internship requirements and that agreements with agencies are maintained, consulting with faculty committee when necessary.
5% - On-campus Public Relations
- Prepares announcements and promotional materials to advertise internship opportunities to students and faculty. Produces copy for student handbook, UCSC General Catalog, and other written and electronic publications.
- Develops and makes presentations to students, staff, and faculty at orientation and advising events. Participates in outreach and pipeline activities.
- Develops and maintains contact with other campus internship coordinators to share information, develop joint initiatives where appropriate, reduce duplication of effort, and collaborate to provide good service to students and faculty.
- Provides coordination with faculty, Biology Undergraduate Advising staff and Health Sciences Career Advising staff to ensure students receive consistent information about internship opportunities and obligations and that services and support activities among the units are clearly delineated.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Working knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
- Ability to work long periods of time at a computer with or without accommodation.
- Will be required to work a hybrid work schedule, days of the week and number of days to be determined, and be able to fulfill requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
