Department BSD MED - Genetic Medicine - Pott Research Staff About the Department The Pott lab is looking for a Bioinformatician to support and advance our research projects. We are at the University of Chicago in the Department of Medicine’s Section of Genetic Medicine. Our lab is located on the Hyde Park Campus of the University of Chicago, on the shore of Lake Michigan and a short 15-minute drive from downtown Chicago. The Pott lab aims to achieve a mechanistic and quantitative understanding of gene regulation in normal and diseased human cells. We combine (1) the development of multi-modal single-cell and single-molecule genomics technologies, (2) the generation of cellular atlases of healthy and diseased tissues using single-cell methods, (3) organoid-based cell culture systems to model healthy and diseased states ex vivo (4) and CRISPR-based genetic perturbations for high-throughput functional screens of regulatory features. Job Summary The Bioinformatician is a computational biologist is responsible for the design and implementation of bioinformatics analysis and services. The individual will perform data curation and analysis for genomics projects. They will also create data algorithms and use specialized computer software to identify and classify components of scientific biological systems. Responsibilities Develop and implement software methodologies and computational tools. Actively seeks out emerging industry practices and new technologies to leverage project capabilities. Devise, modify or test procedures to solve complex problems. Execute and roll out efficient project specific solutions. Document, follow up and support projects after initial completion. Contributes to writing articles, reports and manuscripts. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings and progress reports. Develop new or modify existing procedures to solve complex problems in research projects. Design and perform formal evaluation of informatics methods and products. Create or modify web-based bioinformatics tools. Develop programs to perform analyses and generate both routine and ad hoc reports. Manipulate publicly accessible, commercial, or proprietary genomic, proteomic, or post-genomic databases. Identify problems, determine solutions, and ensure implementation in a timely manner. Independently investigate and implement workflows into production level software. Provide bioinformatics support to project based clients and collaborators. Consult with researchers to analyze problems, recommend technology-based solutions, or determine computational strategies. Communicate research results through conference presentations, scientific publications, or project reports. Provide training on biomedical informatics related concepts, applications, and tools. Organize and maintain standard operating procedure documents for lab operations, including using the software platforms GitHub, Notion and similar. Contribute to the development of training, tools, and process documentation Interprets data analysis of high throughput genomics, proteomics and genetic data. Plans own resources to implement or modify existing web-based bioinformatics tools. Performs other related work as needed. Minimum Qualifications Education: Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field. --- Work Experience: Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline. --- Certifications: --- Preferred Qualifications Education: Advanced degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field. Technical Skills or Knowledge: Experience in programming for bioinformatics with scripting languages such as Perl, Python, R, Java, XML, C/C or SQL. Experience with next generation sequencing technologies such as BWA, STAR, GATK, samtools, and other tools. Experience with single cell genomics analysis software such as Seurat, scanpy, ArchR, or similar. Preferred Competencies Knowledge of theoretical and applied statistics. Knowledge of research techniques or methods. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to write research publications. Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, set priorities and meet deadlines. Ability to work with teams of clinicians, biologists, bioinformaticians and/or biostatisticians to provide hands-on technical support.
