Job Summary
The University of Colorado Boulder encourages applications for an AV Lead Specialist position! This role provides professional audio/visual support for all types of events and other conference-related services, and is tasked with assuring customers AV needs and requirements are satisfied for events in and outside of the University Memorial Center (UMC). The AV Lead Specialist works within the UMC, but is also responsible for the management of AV services offered for offsite locations within the CU Boulder campus.
This position determines AV needs, applies acceptable AV standards and practices, and acts as a source of knowledge by providing direction, guidance, and troubleshooting assistance to customers, students, faculty, and staff. Additionally, this position hires, schedules and trains the UMC student AV team, which includes teaching the fundamentals of AV, correct equipment use and operating procedures, employee expectations, and overall standard processes for AV set-up. This position works directly with the UMC AV and Setup Manager to plan and use budgeted funds for the purchase of new AV equipment, as well as making the best use of existing equipment whenever possible.
This position works in cooperation with both the first and second shifts of the UMC Set-up team and lends support when needed. This can include assisting the team in setup and tear down of event furniture, room cleaning/maintenance, and other duties as assigned by the AV and Setup Manager, and requires the ability to work some nights and weekends to support the business needs of UMC events.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
- Responsible for setup of AV equipment used for all UMC rooms and other campus event spaces in a timely manner and to customer's needs and satisfaction.
- Review campus reservations in the Event Management System (EMS) and Coordinate with Event Planners to properly reserve rooms and schedule student AV staff.
- Manage the weekly scheduling of student staff and work in cooperation with UMC Set-up and Custodial crews to ensure spaces are ready for events.
- Act as the lead AV tech during important UMC events, which includes introducing clients to the student AV staff and performing initial meet and greet on events.
- Attend weekly AV/UMC set-up meetings to assess upcoming events with planners and supervisor.
- Recommend new equipment purchases and upgrades to UMC Event and Setup Manager.
- Responsible for the hiring, training, and supervision of student staff. This includes training of proper set-up and tear down, inspecting work, and proper safety procedures and equipment operation.
- Position is responsible for evaluation of AV student employees, gathering feedback from UMC setup staff, UMC Event Manager, UMC set-up student supervisor and clients to assist with evaluation outcomes.
- Coordinate student employee availability for UMC and CU trainings on diversity requirements.
- Provide clients and Event Planners with audio visual guidance, direction, and consultation for the many indoor and outdoor events.
- Develop and maintain AV technical manuals and other documents including policies and procedures for AV student staff to refer to when needed.
- Test and maintain equipment, both preventive and assessment for repair needs.
- Set-up and program the Extron and Crestron AV operating systems, making adjustments and resets as necessary to ensure proper performance of the systems.
- Provide guidance to students on proper maintenance and storage of equipment in both the AV storage areas and AV office, in front of the house and back of the house.
- Work closely with and assists the UMC setup team with event setups, modifications, teardowns, room cleanings, and other tasks as assigned. Act as a backup team lead for the setup team when needed.
What You Should Know
- The standard schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, 8am-5pm, but hours can adjust with ample notification based on need. Evening and weekend work may be necessary due to UMC event operational needs.
What We Can Offer
The salary range for this role is $50,000 to $56,000 annually. Onboarding assistance is available within Student Affairs guidelines.

What We Require
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in a related field.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to pass a motor vehicle background check.
What You Will Need
- Broad knowledge of audio visual concepts, equipment, and software in the areas of audio, video, and lighting.
- Experience in the setup and operation of equipment for each area of AV including but not limited to: audio boards, lighting boards, video switchers, projectors, monitors, splitters, microphones, speakers, and power distribution.
- Knowledge in the concepts of gain structure, signal flow, mix minus, and troubleshooting.
- Effective analytical and problem solving skills.
- Technical and computer troubleshooting skills.

What We Would Like You to Have
- Experience in a supervisory or leadership role
- Specific knowledge of audio equipment including: Yamaha, Allen & Heath, Mackie, and Behringer mixers. DI boxes, Shure wired and wireless microphones, digital audio recorders, audio interfaces, JBL speakers and line arrays.
- Specific knowledge of video equipment including: Crestron and Extron media control systems, Samsung and Epson projectors, Logitech and Meeting Owl cameras, video switchers, televisions, and monitors.
- Specific knowledge of lighting equipment including:
- Chamsys and ETC lighting boards, ETC paradigm control and dimming systems, static/moving light fixtures.
- Knowledge of PC and Mac operating systems.
- Customer support with logging onto wireless networks.
- Skill with Power Point presentation software.
- Experience with video conferencing techniques and software such as Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and OBS.
- Strong ability in troubleshooting all manor of audio visual hardware and software.
- Experience working at an institution of higher education.
