Job Title: Breeding Core I

Job Summary:


This full-time, University Staff (unclassified) Breeding Core I position will provide routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Changes and/or cleans soiled animal cages and/or pens, feeding devices and watering devices. Assists the Breeding Core Lead with various colony management tasks as requested.
  • Updates and utilizes breeding database as required. Communicates with assigned labs or asks lead/supervisor for assistance when needed. Problem solves breeding concerns when issues arise.
  • Completes breeding summaries and census as required.
  • Cleans/sanitizes at regular intervals direct and indirect animal contact surfaces by washing with appropriate detergents/disinfectants.
  • Collects soiled animal bedding and other wastes and transports to designated waste disposal sites (i.e. cage wash room or dumpster).
  • Procures animal feed, bedding and supplies from appropriate support areas and transports to required use site.
  • Evaluate the basic health status of animals and reports abnormalities to the appropriate personnel. Weighs, administers medications, breeds, records breeding status data information, euthanizes, restrains, tags, snips, weans, footpad tattoos and transports laboratory animals as directed by lead, supervisor or, veterinarian.
  • Records daily animal care activities on room check-sheets, enters work activities into database, contacts appropriate personnel regarding dead/sick animals via software, e-mail or phone.
  • Scans cage cards to record animal census in the animal rooms and posts reports on a weekly basis.
  • Selects, prepares, dispenses and utilizes hazardous chemicals and disinfectants according to manufacturer’s instructions in cleaning and sanitizing animal rooms, racks, cages and pens and animal support areas.
  • Operates mechanical equipment such as floor buffers, high pressure washers, laundry equipment, and environmental monitoring equipment for cleaning/sanitizing purposes.
  • Cleans/sanitizes/disinfects animal holding rooms, procedure rooms, and support rooms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Animal Care requires collectively one-year previous animal handling experience.
    • Substitution: College coursework in veterinary technology, animal science, biology, or a related field of study related to the work assignment may substitute year-for-year for the general experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with server and application administration
  • Experience in an animal research facility
  • Experience with creating and working within database programs and familiar with active directory and the Microsoft Suite.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, in English
  • Computer skills that include experience with e-mail, word processing, and utilization of tracking software, especially with the Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to handle and manipulate rodents
  • Knowledge of an animal research facility
  • Ability to maintain an activity log
  • Ability to work with complex machinery
  • Planning and organization skills
  • Mechanical and physical ability

Anticipated Pay Range:


The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $38,000 - $43,200

The above hiring range represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation depending on the level.
