Job Summary:


The Department Director of Finance and Administration (DFA) is the administrative leader for one of the most prestigious Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the nation, with 13 freestanding clinics, 8 subspecialty divisions, a top-20 NIH-funded research programs, and a full complement of educational programs including medical students, 7 fellowship programs, and a 37 FTE residency program.

The DFA has authority over the business affairs, funds, and resources of a ~$85m Department. The DFA represents the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology when interfacing with affiliates and non-affiliated entities, including CU Medicine, Denver Health and Hospital Authority, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, Rose Medical Center, Highlands Ranch Hospital, and several other clinical entities in the Rocky Mountain region and beyond. This role is also responsible for oversight in strategic planning, executing initiatives, and guiding growth in the Department in partnership with the Department Chair, Division leadership, and Vice Chairs.

Key Responsibilities:

Finance

  • Oversees, Directs, and Manages all funds of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, including State appropriations, gift and endowment funds, grant and contract funds, clinical contract funds, and grant release funds.
  • Manages the financial aspects of Strategic Planning and Faculty/Staff recruitment.
  • Oversees financial reporting, analysis, forecasting, and business planning.
  • Negotiates institutional budgetary support for operational activities, recruitment packages, capital procurement, and facility improvement.
  • Develops and maintains, with department leadership, standardized compensation plans for faculty and senior administrators, and implements an annual review of effort, productivity, and funding sources for all faculty.
  • Oversees departmental purchasing activities, including delegation of purchasing responsibilities and adherence to purchasing policy, acquisition of capital equipment items and major capital building/renovation, and negotiation of leases.

Human Resource

  • Develops, leads, and directs the administrative team that manages clinical, education, and research administration functions at the department and division levels.
  • Promotes a positive, collaborative, inclusive, and effective working environment.
  • Directs, supervises, and oversees personnel matters for the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, including position establishment, recruitment, hiring and supervision of staff, performance planning and appraisal, and termination processes.
  • Oversees and coordinates the appointment, re-appointment, promotion, tenure, retention activities, and grievance procedures for faculty in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology with appropriate campus and outside agency personnel when necessary.

Operations and Compliance

  • Administers pertinent State Fiscal Policies, State, CU School of Medicine, University of Colorado rules and procedures, and applicable State and Federal laws and standards applying to business management (personnel, accounting, auditing, etc.).
  • Develops, implements, and enforces additional policies at the departmental level on behalf of the Chair.
  • Oversees Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology facilities, both on and off campus, to ensure the efficiency of operations, in collaboration with the Community Practice Division. The department manages 13 free-standing School of Medicine Clinics.
  • Oversees a comprehensive Sites of Practice (SOP) portfolio of 50 SOPs.

Strategy

  • Partners with CU SOM and CU Medicine leadership on growth strategies in the clinical, education, and research arenas.
  • In partnership with the chair, fosters and promotes financial growth and health of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology through the development of new and expanded funding sources and opportunities.
  • Provides oversight and guides all acquisition, Professional Services Agreements, and outreach contracts.
  • Participates in strategic planning in concert with the organization's goals that contribute toward market growth, revenue enhancement, cost containment, and maximizing clinical practice and research productivity.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Work Location:


Hybrid – this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 or more days per week on campus and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:


Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance, business/public administration, or a related field.
  • Four (4) years of broad and diversified senior management experience that includes fiscal management responsibilities within a complex health care, academic, or biomedical research setting.
    • Substitution: A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A Master’s Degree in Health Administration, Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Eight (8) years of experience working in a healthcare or academic medical setting.
  • Prior leadership experience in an Obstetrics & Gynecology environment.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and within diverse team structures.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • High level of attention to detail, organization, and project management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, handle a fast-paced environment.

Anticipated Pay Range:


The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $119,000 to $160,000.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University’s good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
