Position Summary
Support of the Spiritual life of Muslim students and creating awareness through events and programs with support of the Muslim Student Association of Islamic faith and culture to the Detroit Mercy community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Responsibilities
- Serve as the program consultant, advocate, educator, and spiritual companion to the members of the Muslim student community, including student organizations focused on the Islamic faith tradition.
- Organize and attend Friday prayer, Jumu’ah, whenever possible, and with Muslim students will oversee the care of the Islamic Prayer Space in the Student Union and various Islamic and multi-faith prayer spaces on the Detroit Mercy campuses.
- Serve as the University Ministry liaison with the Muslim faculty on campus who serve as advisors to MSA (Muslim Student Association) and collaborate with the Islamic Studies director.
- Collaborate with members of University Ministry to promote and implement the department’s mission vision and programs, especially on ecumenical and interfaith programs, events, and service.
- Develop innovative ways to reach young adults in a university setting.
- Participate in University Ministry program planning, retreats, and department work as needed.
- Be available as needed for crisis situations.
- Perform other duties as may be agreed upon with the Director of University Ministry.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Attend weekly departmental staff meetings (at least twice a month).
- Meet regularly with the Director of University Ministry
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Extensive knowledge of Islam and ability to speak Arabic for the purpose of prayer.
- Experience working with the Muslim community, knowledge of and sensitivity to the breadth of the Islamic tradition as well as other faith traditions and cultural practices.
- Ability to work across cultural and religious boundaries with a diverse community.
- Minimum of two years of professional experience working with young adults in faith/spiritual formation.
- Excellent communication skills, an energetic and outgoing personality, strong administrative/organizational skills, and the ability to work on a ministry team are essential; including proficiency in relevant technology or willingness to learn.
- Availability for some evening and weekend work.
- Competency in multicultural and interfaith issues
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Master’s degree in theology/religious studies, divinity, pastoral ministry, or related field.
- Interest and knowledge of Ignatian and/or Mercy spirituality and the tradition of Jesuit or Mercy education.
- Experience in University Ministry or Student Services setting.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Canva, iMovie, and social media (Instagram, TikTok).
Physical Requirements
Job may require lifting weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping

Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in the normal office
