This position is responsible for planning and overseeing promotional activities for books written for academic audiences published by the State University System Press (University Press of Florida). This position also oversees the day-to-day activities of the Press’s exhibits and awards programs and coordinates journal marketing activities. The focus of the work will be to raise the profile and boost sales of the Press’s books and journals, primarily among scholarly audiences, by planning and implementing campaigns to reviewers, instructors, and direct subscribers; creating social media and other marketing content; coordinating the Press’s presence at exhibits, preparing materials for exhibit displays, and promoting exhibit-related sales; and submitting appropriate books to prize nominations. This position also manages the internship program for the Sales and Marketing Department. This position requires strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management. Excellent written communication skills are essential.
Presence in Gainesville area required; this is an in-person position and not eligible to be fully remote. Some travel required.
- Academic Promotions: Responsible for managing promotional activities for scholarly monographs and edited volumes published by the Press.
- Strategizes and researches promotional plans for new and new-to-paper academic titles.
- Communicates with academic authors to plan promotional activities, to support their promotional efforts, and to answer their questions about the marketing process.
- Prepares marketing copy for academic titles.
- Solicits and collects advance promotional statements (blurbs) for academic titles.
- Reviews and helps optimize metadata for forthcoming academic titles.
- Prepares publication announcement email lists for academic titles.
- Manages course adoption promotions for academic titles.
- Maintains schedule of routine pre-publication discount emails and monthly subject-specific roundups, overseeing their creation and sending via an email service provider.
- Oversees outreach to relevant academic/professional associations on a title-by-title basis.
- Implements social media campaigns to promote academic titles.
- Solicits and edits guest posts and op eds by academic authors for the UPF blog and other media outlets.
- Creates and updates content on the UPF website homepage on a regular basis.
- Exhibits Program: Responsible for managing exhibits program of approximately 22 staff-attended or virtual conferences and book fairs per year, plus additional secondary exhibits.
- Develops and maintains database of conferences, book fairs, trade shows, and other exhibition opportunities, tracking deadlines, costs, and contacts.
- Rents all booth space and advertising from show contractors.
- Directs preparation of all display materials, including flyers, ads, social media graphics, and website graphics.
- Identifies most appropriate books and journals to display in connection with each meeting.
- Coordinates the participation of acquisitions staff in exhibit-related virtual content.
- Plans and implements a robust virtual presence for each exhibit that includes a sale page on the website, exhibit-related announcements and recaps on social media, exhibit-related email promotions, and supplementary promotions.
- Prepares exhibit component of annual marketing budget.
- Awards Program: Responsible for managing submissions of Press titles to book awards.
- Tracks a wide variety of prize and award deadlines.
- Identifies appropriate Press titles for judges’ consideration.
- Ensures the timely submission of materials well in advance of award deadlines.
- Creates and posts announcements of award wins on Facebook, Twitter, and Wordpress.
- Journals Marketing: Coordinates marketing activities for journals program, which includes 10 scholarly journals of various disciplines.
- Creates and sends journal issue and article alerts via an email service provider.
- Posts new journal issues, articles of interest, calls for papers, and other journal announcements on social media.
- Plans journal promotions and prepares journal materials for display at relevant conferences attended by the Press or by journal editors.
- Highlights journals within relevant academic books campaigns when appropriate.
- Internship Program: Responsible for managing the internship program for the Sales and Marketing Department.
- Solicits applications, reviews materials, and hires 2 student interns per semester.
- Supervises intern activities and coordinates intern schedules for the department.
- Communicates with department staff regarding intern schedules and projects.
- Coordinates with contacts from other departments in the planning and scheduling of press-wide internship activities and initiatives.

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and one year of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must have a valid driver's license.
Strong working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office Suite (especially Word and Excel), database programs (such as Access or FileMaker), and social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WordPress, etc.).
One year of related professional experience. Priority will be given to experience in book publishing, particularly at a university press.
Excellent written communication skills.
Strong skills in organization, prioritization, and time management.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
Familiarity with email marketing programs (such as MailChimp or Constant Contact), Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and Cat’s Pajamas Publisher Program.
