What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodial Superintendent position at University of Florida?

Responsible for administrative and management functions for custodial/housekeeping areas in the J. Wayne Reitz Union (JWRU), including the Reitz Union Hotel

  • Hire, train, and supervise custodial/housekeeping staff; develop goals relevant to the area and provide direction and leadership for goal accomplishment
  • Responsible for administrative functions related to employee time approval and reporting, performance evaluation, and related human resource functions
  • Responsible for developing specifications for goods, services, and equipment to be purchased for housekeeping operations; ensure compliance with appropriate department and university purchasing procedures and guidelines; gather information, make cost and quality comparisons of new products, and ensure appropriate decisions based on evaluation of relevant information
  • Responsible for establishing and maintaining an inventory control system for supplies and equipment; monitor consumption and order supplies as needed including hotel guest amenities
  • Responsible for initiating and providing oversight for approved service agreements and other contractual services with external vendors as needed
  • Responsible for budget preparation and monitoring for area of responsibility including but not limited to cost projections, purchasing, and financial controls
  • Develop and implement written operating policies and procedures including but not limited to safety standards, work quality standards, handling of hazardous materials, and related tasks
  • Advise supervisor and/or upper level administrator on building housekeeping issues as needed; be knowledgeable and up-to-date on changing code requirements, new methods, procedures, and technology in housekeeping services
  • Identify, plan, and coordinate special cleaning projects, using external contractors as needed
  • Collaborate with other departments on campus as needed for services, information, and/or assistance (e.g., Housing and Residence Education, Facilities Services)
  • JWRU Custodial staff are essential staff and may be called to work if the JWRU is selected as an emergency shelter or essential staff are deemed necessary

Responsible for management of staff and workflow for housekeeping operations in the JWRU (including the Reitz Union Hotel)

  • Plan, implement, and revise work shift schedules as necessary to ensure maximum utilization of work force; plan, organize, assign, and manage tasks and workflow so that routine and special cleaning tasks, and emergency responses are handled in a timely and efficient manner; coordinate employee leave and overtime in accordance with housekeeping needs and department guidelines
  • Collaborate with and participate as a member of the JWRU building services delivery team including Event Services, Maintenance, Productions, and Catering Services; coordinate cleaning schedules and work load forecasts with building operating hours, scheduled events and building traffic forecasts; plan work schedule as necessary to accommodate changing priorities within the facility
  • Plan and implement job training programs for supervisors and employees on safety, current and new cleaning methods, products, equipment, applications, cleaning standards, excellent customer service, and related topics; plan and coordinate demonstrations and instruction by vendors on cleaning methods, products, and proper use of equipment
  • Plan and implement orientation for new employees
  • Responsible for ensuring material safety data (MSDS) notebook is up-to-date; ensure regular reviews for housekeeping staff of MSDS information
  • Respond to personnel issues as needed; keep supervisor informed in a timely manner regarding issues; conduct counseling and disciplinary meetings or other follow-up with staff as directed; document issues, meetings, and actions
  • Responsible for moving equipment or furniture to assist with cleaning in unexposed areas or flipping mattresses, which requires the ability to lift over 45lbs
  • Interpret university and department policies and procedures for staff as needed
  • Ensure compliance with safety standards, OSHA, ADA and other relevant regulations at all times

Responsible for quality assurance

  • Establish and ensure compliance with high quality standards for all work performed (work performed by internal staff as well as contracted vendors)
  • Conduct facility inspections (including hotel guest rooms and common areas) and coordinate necessary corrective actions to comply with established standards of cleanliness, maintenance, safety, and security
  • Investigate and handle requests from building occupants and customers

Responsible for planning and management of the laundry service for the JWRU

  • Plan and manage the cleaning of laundry for the hotel and Event Services
  • Perform monthly linen inventories
  • Monitor operation of laundry equipment; ensure equipment is in good working condition at all times

Responsible for special building projects associated with building décor, recycling, and related functions

  • Coordinate the materials recycling program for the facility

Develop reports, handle special projects and other duties as assigned



Expected Salary:

$55,000 - $60,000; Commensurate with experience.



Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.



Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience managing a large team
  • Understanding of building cleaning including but not limited to floor care, wall surfaces, windows, offices, restrooms, food areas, meeting and assembly spaces, and common areas
  • Knowledge of budgeting practices
  • Operation and use of various custodial cleaning equipment
  • Aware of current cleaning methods, products, and materials including chemicals; general knowledge in handling and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Experience with hotel housekeeping management including hotel laundry operations
  • Aspects of building cleaning including but not limited to floor care, wall surfaces, windows, and general cleaning of offices, restrooms, and food areas
  • Up-to-date cleaning methods, products, and materials including chemicals
  • Proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials
  • Proficiency with computers and basic software applications
  • Communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Customer service skills
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Experience with training and managing housekeeping employees
  • Planning and organization skills
  • Determine work priorities, assign work and ensure proper completion of work assignments
  • Function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions
  • Handle multiple projects or tasks simultaneously
  • Understand, interpret, and apply rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Work as part of a team in a multi-cultural environment

Normal Work Hours:

  • Normal work schedule is 8:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Flexibility to adjust schedule may be required (including occasional evenings and weekends) depending on the demands of position and/or department needs.
  • JWRU Custodial staff are ‘essential staff’ and may be called to work if the JWRU is selected as an emergency shelter or essential staff are deemed necessary.
  • JWRU building is open 7 days per week and most holidays
