Other conditions: This hire is a full-time, on institutional funds, tenure track position, annually renewable depending on performance and expected to begin approximately JULY/AUGUST 2024 or soon thereafter, subject to position clearance and availability of funds.
 
Assistant Professor Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Participate in teaching graduate, undergraduate and/or medical student level courses or seminars.
  2. Supervise, mentor, train and advise M.S. and Ph.D. students and/or residents and fellows.
  3. Supervise independent study activities and off-campus learning such as practicums and internships.
  4. Serve as academic advisor to students and/or serve on advanced degree committees.
  5. Provide services to the department, school, University, and professional and/or lay community.
  6. Actively collaborate with faculty, undergraduate and graduate students, fellows, and other research partners and affiliate organizations on research projects and activities.
  7. Pursue independent research and collaborate on research with a focus on diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolism and metabolic syndrome, and/or the underlying molecular basis for associated disease pathologies and regulation.
  8. Join and become an active member of the COBRE (NIH-P20)-supported Diabetes Research Center of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (https://drc.jabsom.hawaii.edu/).
  9. Publish scholarly, peer-reviewed research in the area of diabetes, insulin resistance, metabolism and metabolic syndrome, and/or the underlying molecular basis for associated disease pathologies and regulation.
  10. Continue to actively seek extramural funding.
  11. Establish or build on a national reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and similar activities.
  12. Other scholar duties as assigned.
Associate Professor Duties and Responsibilities
Same as Assistant Professor with the additional responsibilities below:
  1. Establish or build on an international reputation through scholarly, peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations and similar activities.
  2. Provide services to the department, school, University, such as department personnel committees, John A. Burns School of Medicine and/or University of Hawaii Tenure and Promotion Review Committees, Faculty senate etc...
Assistant Professor Minimum Qualifications: 
  1. Ph.D. (and/or M.D.) in biological science or relevant field from a college or university of recognized standing.
  2. Evidence of effective undergraduate, graduate, and/or medical student teaching experience.
  3. Evidence of effective research and scholarly activity, e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  4. Experience in diabetes, insulin resistance research, metabolism and metabolic syndrome, and/or the underlying molecular basis for associated disease pathologies and regulation.
  5. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  6. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.
  7. Ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  8. Ability to establish and lead a research laboratory.
  9. Demonstrated ability to obtain external funding.
Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications:
Same as Assistant Professor with the additional minimum qualifications below
  1. At least four years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent, with evidence of increasing professional maturity.
  2. For candidates with an M.D. degree and applying at the associate professor rank, they should have seven or more years of post-doctoral experience in a recognized medical school or major medical research/scholarship.
  3. Evidence of proficiency in teaching.
  4. Scholarly achievement judged competent and adequate for the rank in comparison with peers active in the same field at major research universities.
  5. Ability to lead a research laboratory.
  6. Demonstrated ability to sustain external funding
Desirable Qualifications: 
  1. Demonstrated independence (for example, establishing an independent laboratory) and career initiative.
  2. First and/or senior author papers in high quality journals.
  3. Current external support (for example, NIH R01 or equivalent).
  4. National recognition for contribution to biomedical research field of expertise.
  5. Serve on NIH or equivalent study section.
  6. Specialization in a research area complementary to existing expertise within the department and the Diabetes Research Center of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (https://drc.jabsom.hawaii.edu/), with a focus related to diabetes and/or insulin resistance.
