The Department of Educational Administration (EDEA) is seeking candidates whose teaching and scholarship addresses critical questions related to equity and justice in education. We are particularly interested in candidates whose work considers how educational leadership might transform inequities in PK–12 schools and school systems as well as broader learning environments. This position is open to scholars with a range of methodological approaches. Mixed methodologists with critical quantitative approaches to educational inquiry are strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, candidates should demonstrate strong commitments to advancing equity in research, teaching, and advising.

The successful candidate will be able to teach across the department’s programs (Hawaii Certification for Instructional Leadership [HICISL], MEd, and PhD in Educational Administration), advise and mentor MEd/credential and PhD students, and work with students, staff, faculty, and community leaders from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. We welcome candidates who bring a critical understanding of diversity to their own life experiences, who understand the barriers facing historically underrepresented groups in PK-12 and higher education, and who have engaged in teaching, research, professional and/or public service that promote equity.
 
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach graduate courses in educational leadership via on-campus and/or a variety of distance delivery modes;
  • Coordinate the Department’s K–12 program focusing on developing educational leaders (e.g., recruit and participate in admissions, coordinate student theses and dissertation committees, develop curriculum, and mentor affiliate and adjunct faculty members);
  • Participate in program review, assessment, and accreditation activities;
  • Develop and maintain an active program of research/scholarly activity in area of specialization;
  • Advise graduate students in the EDEA department and other graduate programs as needed;
  • Conduct outreach and service to the Hawaii Department of Education (HIDOE);
  • Provide service to the department, college, university, public schools, and professional community;
  • Other duties as assigned.
 
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Doctorate in K–12 or educational leadership and administration or closely related field from an accredited institution; will consider ABD, if doctoral degree will be completed by date of hire.
  2. Demonstrated successful leadership experience in K–12 school settings.
  3. Experience in (co)designing and/or coordinating education programs.
  4. Evidence of effective teaching and mentoring at the undergraduate and/or graduate level in K–12 educational leadership and/or closely related field.
  5. Demonstrated commitment to equity and justice and experience working with historically underrepresented populations.
  6. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
 
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Expertise in quantitative research methodologies.
  2. History of work with and in various education systems in Hawaii (e.g., University of Hawaii, Hawaii Department of Education, Kamehameha Schools, etc.).
  3. Continuous scholarly research publications in the categories of educational leadership, education policy and politics, Indigenous education, social justice, and/or educational programming and evaluation.
  4. Successful grant writing in areas related to the position.
  5. Strong expertise in educational program design and implementation, professional development, curricular frameworks, and other approaches to support the development of educational leadership. 
  6. Building and sustaining relationships and strategic partnerships to ensure robust program development.
  7. Strong collegial communication and collaborative teamwork skills.
