Duties and Responsibilities
   (NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)
  1. **Assists the Director of Land and Ocean Conservation in providing administrative oversight to the Office of Land and Ocean Conservation Futures, under the direction of the Vice President for Research and Innovation.
  2. **Assists in the implementation of the work of the Office of Land and Ocean Conservation Futures.
  3. **Coordinates major conservation education, research and service units and programs, and major conservation initiatives, system-wide and on UH campuses, and bridging conservation-related programs and academic relationships between and among University of Hawai'i campuses, and with partner colleges and universities in the Pacific Islands, as assigned.
  4. **Coordinates the University of Hawaii¿s membership and participation in the Hawaii Conservation Alliance.
  5. **Supervises the employees of the UH OVPRI Hawaii Conservation Alliance unit.
  6. **Supervises the employees of and administers specific conservation research units as assigned by UH OVPRI.
  7. **Assists in identifying and coordinating research, education, funding and other opportunities, partnerships, policies, and initiatives to improve nature conservation across the state by leveraging, coordinating and integrating the University's research enterprise, programs, courses and degrees, facilities and capabilities in areas of nature conservation.
  8. **Assists in planning, administering, and coordinating strategic and programmatic needs of the program related to nature conservation.
  9. **Works with partner agencies (e.g., State, County, Federal (DoD, USFWS, USFS, NPS, NOAA, and other federal agencies), non-profit organizations, businesses, cultural and community groups, etc.) to plan and execute conservation initiatives and strategies.
  10. **Provides input, reviews, evaluates, advises, and participates in the development of research policies and procedures related to nature conservation.
  11. **Assists in developing legislation, policy, and initiatives both at the State and Federal levels that promote improved nature conservation management.
  12. **Assists in developing and facilitating implementation of policy and other strategies in nature conservation to generate resources, exposure, and funding opportunities for the University.
  13. **Interfaces in nature conservation affairs to federal and state agencies, and assists in representing the University to all users and stakeholders including internal institutional divisions/units, as well as externally to the media, government agencies, legislative bodies, government and other funding agencies, cultural and community groups, and businesses at national, state, and local levels, and the Hawai'i Conservation Alliance.
  14. **Meets with leadership, faculty and staff to ensure coordination and collaboration among different nature conservation programs across the UH System.
  15. **Provides assistance to campuses upon request with the intent to help them develop campus-oriented nature conservation research and education efforts.
  16. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Possession of a baccalaureate educational degree in Business, Law, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Liberal Arts or related field and 5 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for planning, directing and managing operations of program and initiatives in nature conservation across multiple campuses/major organizational units of a complex organization, or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  2. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of nature conservation administration and operations as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  3. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with nature conservation administration and operations.
  4. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  5. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  7. Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  8. Demonstrated experience connecting students with conservation resource managers in educational and/or research programs.
  9. Demonstrated experience working in the intersection of conservation and culture in the field of higher education in Hawaii and/or the Pacific.
  10. Demonstrated experience working with federal and state agencies and local communities in Hawaii and/or the Pacific in the intersection of conservation-related education, research and service.
  11. Demonstrated experience collaborating across campuses on different islands in Hawaii and/or the Pacific.
  12. If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Desirable Qualifications
  1. Possession of a master's degree or terminal degree from an accredited college or university in Business, Law, Social Sciences, Biological Sciences, Natural Resource Management, Planning, Liberal Arts or related field.
