CONDITIONS
Appointment to begin August 1, 2024. The position is an 11-month, one-year appointment with the possibility for renewal as the Director for the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program renewable based on satisfactory performance and College of Education needs. Should the candidate no longer serve as Director, the position will revert to the individual’s 9-month position in KRS. Outreach funds, contingent upon position clearance and COE needs. Permanent position request will be made.
 
OVERVIEW
The appointee is responsible for curriculum development for the DPT program, obtaining and maintaining Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accreditation, serving as the CAPTE liaison, providing oversight and organization for the DPT program, and interdisciplinary collaboration with John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and across the College of Education (COE) to ensure efficient use of resources, maximize coordination among units, and support research, clinical experiences and fostering community engagement and partnerships.
 
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve as the DPT program representative and principal author in submitting the Application for Candidacy required for the pre-accreditation process as directed by CAPTE.
  • Attend CAPTE required Developing Program Workshop.
  • Coordinate and develop with COE faculty and JABSOM, as appropriate, high-quality pre-clinical and clinical experiences for students. 
  • Instruct and mentor faculty to enhance their roles as educators and scholars as required by CAPTE professional accreditation standards.
  • Study trends and best practices associated with physical therapy programs to ensure financial viability. 
  • Facilitate strategic implementation of the DPT program and courses by COE faculty, JABSOM faculty, clinical sites, and other community collaborators. 
  • Instruct DPT students utilizing competency-based education pedagogy and in-person coursework.
  • Mentor and advise students in the DPT program.
  • Facilitate coordination of research efforts across the COE and with the physical therapy program and departmental personnel. 
  • Convene and oversee the DPT Advisory Council and serve as its direct liaison to the COE administration. 
  • Utilize a continuous quality improvement framework to implement and conduct curriculum and program reviews, student assessment, program evaluation, and improvements, incorporating current academic standards and relevant health facility and patient care policies, protocols, and/or clinical care measures. 
  • Ensure compliance with accreditation, legal, and medical standards and remain updated on local, state and federal regulations as relevant. 
  • Engage in continuing education and training opportunities whenever they become available
  • Serve as a member of the Dean’s Council.
  • Option to teach undergraduate and graduate courses on-campus and using a variety of distance delivery modes; mentor and advise students in the COE in your field of specialty.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. An earned academic doctorate or terminal degree in physical therapy (PhD, EdD, DSc) from an accredited institution;
  2. Evidence of proficiency in teaching. Minimum of four years of full-time college of university teaching at the rank of Assistant Professor or equivalent; 
  3. A minimum of six years employment in higher education with three years as a core faculty member in an CAPTE accredited entry-level physical therapist education program.
  4. Licensed as a Physical Therapist in Hawaii, or eligible for licensure in Hawaii.
  5. Evidence of physical therapy clinic experiences as a preceptor.
  6. Record of scholarship and publication.
  7. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
 
FULL PROFESSOR MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
 [In addition to the Associate Professor Minimum Qualifications above]
  1. Evidence of excellence in teaching. Minimum of four years of full-time college of university teaching at the rank of Associate Professor or equivalent;
  2. Research productivity which has resulted in significant recognition by the national or international community;
  3. Demonstrated capacity for leadership in the department and scholarly discipline.
 
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Demonstrated outcomes in research, publication, and collaboration with colleagues internal and external to the COE. 
  2. Evidence of ability to establish and maintain effective working and collaborative relationships with administrators, faculty, staff, students, legislators, state officials, and the general public. 
  3. Evidence of ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with internal and external constituencies, including preparing and delivering public presentations, conducting research, forging partnerships, and preparing reports. 
  4. Effective interpersonal skills including, diplomacy, initiative, and ethical judgment.
  5. Demonstrated ability in providing professional development for physical therapists at all levels. 
  6. Experience working effectively with empowering and respecting multicultural populations, which may include Native Hawaiians and other indigenous people, immigrants, ethnic minorities in university and community-based educational settings.
