Other Conditions: To begin approximately June 2024; extramural funds. Renewal of appointment is contingent upon availability of funds, program/operational needs, and satisfactory performance.
 
Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in research relating to the advancement of marine energy technologies, including laboratory, basin, flume, and ocean testing of prototype systems.
  • Support research in wave energy converter (WEC) control theory and novel WEC power takeoff (PTO) approaches.
  • Conduct numerical modeling of marine energy systems in support of the Wave Energy Test Site (WETS) and marine energy R&D projects.
  • Assist with field deployments and monitoring of locally deployed WECs.
  • Participate in, and lead where appropriate, the preparation of project summaries, reports, proposals, conference presentations, and technical manuscripts related to the group's marine energy research.
  • Assist with the maintenance and upgrade of research laboratory facilities.
  • Assist with various aspects of the operation of WETS, including working with WEC developers and sponsors to ensure positive outcomes from tests at WETS.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate students as needed.
  • Perform related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in ocean engineering or related field.
  2. Experience with structural engineering modeling systems, as applied to WEC structures.
  3. Experience conducting research, development, fabrication, and testing of wave energy conversion systems.
  4. Knowledge of wave energy conversion systems.
  5. Familiarity with the use of WEC-Sim and related numerical tools in WEC development.
  6. Familiarity with CAD softwares.
  7. Working knowledge in MATLAB.
  8. Ability to generate independent research reports/publications and participate in proposal preparation.
  9. Proven ability to work effectively with senior researchers, research staff, students, and industry personnel.
  10. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Familiarity with oscillating surge-type WECs.
  2. Experience with the use of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, or other nonlinear numerical methodologies as applied to marine energy systems.
  3. Hands on experience in the conduct of wave basin/flume testing, including the development of robust test plans.
