Position Summary:
Sustainability is a core value and strategic priority at the University of Idaho. The University Director of Sustainability leads the development and execution of innovative solutions that have a positive environmental impact and are socially responsible and economically viable. Reporting to the President of the University of Idaho and as a member of the President's leadership team, the University Director of Sustainability provides institutional vision and leadership in developing and recommending key goals and actions to which the university will commit to advance sustainability practices, educational offerings, research innovation, outreach, and advocacy. The Director works closely with university leaders, faculty, students, and staff to foster a culture of sustainability across campus and to identify, develop, implement, and promote collaborative strategies that advance these core values and strategic priorities. The Director also monitors and evaluates program effectiveness, documents performance and trends, and recommends modifications to improve institutional effectiveness. The Director coordinates sustainability responsibilities assigned to other operational, academic, research, and student functions by leading multi-disciplinary teams and work groups governing and implementing sustainability initiatives, programs, and projects across our campuses, centers, and field sites.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in sustainability, environmental education, environmental science, conservation, natural resource management, science communication, or closely related discipline. Six years of progressively responsible experience in sustainability, conservation, environmental education, environmental science, science communication, or closely related discipline including:
Five years of experience leading cross-functional teams.
Five years of management of sustainability projects and programs, including water, energy, food, waste, infrastructure, etc.
Researching, developing, and planning sustainability programs & initiatives.
Developing and fostering strategic relationships and partnerships across departments and institutions.
Managing budgets.
Providing services in a complex, decentralized organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
Masters degree in sustainability, environmental education, environmental science, conservation, natural resource management, or closely related discipline.
Experience
Demonstrated leadership of teams without direct supervisory oversight.
Demonstrated skills in negotiation and conflict resolution.
Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and coalitions resulting in shared actions and outcomes.
Working successfully with individuals from diverse background and cultures.
Working in higher education setting in a position related to sustainability, or a closely related discipline.
Surveys, data collection, data analysis, and data visualization.
Science communication.
Technical knowledge and skills related to water, energy, waste management, built environment, etc.
Taking complex concepts and develop training plans appropriate to the needs and technical abilities of diverse audiences and deliver training in a variety of ways.
Knowledge
Extensive knowledge of sustainability, culture change, process improvement
