Unit Overview
This Psychologist position is within the Clinical Service of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Counseling & Psychological Services is comprised of the Clinical Service, the Campus Assistance, Resource, and Education (CARE) Coordinator (confidential support for students who have experienced gender-based violence), and the Testing Service. CAPS clinical staff consists of psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, and trainees. CAPS is a unit within Student Affairs at the University of Kansas.

The Clinical Service has responsibility for providing psychological services to the students of the University of Kansas. CAPS Clinical Service contributes to the educational mission of the University by assisting students in meeting personal, social, and academic challenges as they negotiate their college careers. CAPS Clinical Service provides programs designed to increase awareness and educate students about important issues related to life skills, adjustment, and college life. Additionally, CAPS contributes to the educational mission by providing an APA accredited internship program and provides supervision and training to doctoral interns in psychology, practicum students in psychology, and other students-in-training. It also works closely with offices within Student Affairs and other University offices.

General Responsibilities
CAPS Psychologists provide individual and group therapy, crisis intervention, and psychological testing to eligible students of the University. Psychologists also provide outreach and consultation to students, faculty and staff, and supervision to graduate students and other students- in-training. All responsibilities are performed in accordance with the professional and ethical guidelines of the American Psychological Association and the established administrative policies and procedures of CAPS.
  • The incumbent in this position will see, hear and have access to confidential information that must be handled in accordance with all relevant state and federal laws and University policies and procedures regarding its use and disclosure.
  • This position also is authorized to review, create, and process client information &/or data in accordance with established procedures in the performance of job duties.

Job Description

65% Provides psychotherapy to KU students. Services include diagnostic evaluations, psychological testing, individual therapy, group therapy, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, and participation in interdisciplinary clinical team meetings. Maintains clinical records in accordance with CAPS policy and state/federal regulations. Complies with the duties and responsibilities relative to ePHI and IT Security.

25% Provides training and supervision to graduate students-in-training including psychology interns and practicum students. Provides direct supervision, participates in professional seminars, and participates in development of training curriculum and other training activities.

5% Provides outreach and prevention activities including consultation to faculty, administration, and other staff regarding student adjustment, mental health, and development issues. Develops and presents programs designed to increase awareness and educate students about important issues such as personal development, stress management, ADHD, prevention, and adjustment to college life. Supports and implements activities designed to enhance diversity within CAPS, Student Affairs, and the University.

5% Carries out other responsibilities as requested by the Director or Associate Director/s as needed including, but not limited to, participation on University committees, and implementation of research activities and special projects. Acquires and maintains Kansas psychologist license.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Clinical Psychology or Counseling Psychology from an APA accredited program conferred by start date and one year related professional experience.
  • Successful completion of APA accredited doctoral internship in Psychology.
  • Licensed or license eligible by start date for permanent or temporary license at the doctoral level in the state of Kansas.
  • Experience providing individual psychotherapy to a college age population as evidenced by application materials.
  • Strong written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in providing supervision and training.
  • Experience in providing group therapy.
  • Experience in using brief/solution focused therapy techniques.
  • Experience in DSM-5 diagnosis and assessment of mental status.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence with conducting psychological assessment and interest in providing training in assessment
  • Demonstrated experience in outreach and prevention.
  • Demonstrated experience in and commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and commitment to ongoing development of multicultural competence.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience with providing mental health services to individuals from culturally diverse backgrounds using culturally-responsive clinical care.
  • Previous training and expertise in the needs of diverse students will be given special consideration.
  • Strong verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in and significant experience with working collaboratively with a diverse population of student, faculty, staff, administrators, and other members of the community.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively on an interdisciplinary team, to take initiative, and to be flexible in response to developing demands and challenges of the position.
