Are you passionate about supporting our nation's veterans as they transition to civilian life and pursue higher education? Do you have a strong commitment to helping veterans achieve their academic and career goals? If so, the University of Southern Maine invites you to join our team as a TRIO Upward Bound Advisor.

TRIO Veterans Upward Bound (VUB), a Department of Education grant-funded program, at the University of Southern Maine works with veterans to prepare for enrollment at the college or program of their choice. VUB services are free-of-charge and are designed for veterans who have not yet completed a bachelor’s degree. VUB helps veterans refresh their academic skills providing them with confidence to successfully complete their degree.

As a TRIO Veterans Upward Bound Advisor, you'll have the honor of providing personalized guidance, resources, and support to military veterans as they navigate the path to educational success. This position provides direct service and support to veterans through academic, career and college planning, and monitoring progress toward graduation from college. Specific responsibilities include the provision of guidance and mentoring to optimize the student retention and success in the program and in college.

This is a full-time grant funded position with a starting annual salary up to $42,374 commensurate with experience. This position will be based primarily on the Gorham Campus.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, psychology, social work, or a related field.
  • Previous adolescent or adult level advising or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and experience working with veterans and/or individuals from diverse social, economic, ethnic, academic, and cultural backgrounds like those of Veteran’s Upward Bound (VUB) veterans.
  • At least one-year comparable experience working with a similar population.
  • Ability to provide own transportation, provide proof of a valid driver’s license, and compliance with Maine law regarding vehicle insurance.
