Under the general supervision of the Periop Director and Sterile Processing Manager, the Team Leader is responsible for guiding instrument processing technicians and developing and implementing systems that cost-effectively support clinical operations without compromising the quality of patient care. Expected practice behaviors include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the processes utilized to decontaminate, assemble, package, sterilize, and distribute reusable medical/surgical supplies and patient care equipment.
The Team Leader of Central Sterile Processing not only demonstrates competency to perform all sterile processing tasks and knowledge of the principle of sterile processing technique, material handling and proper operation and repair of sterilization equipment, but also takes a lead in ensuring safety standards are met. This includes knowledge of safety issues as they relate to instrument processing (i.e. physical and chemical regulations, infection control), a crucial aspect of our operations that we trust our Team Leader to uphold.
The Sterile Processing Team Leader must not only demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age, culture, ethnicity, and specific individual diagnostic needs of the patients served in his/her department but also be able to assess and interpret data about the patient’s status in order to identify each patient’s specific needs and provide the care needed by the patient group (pediatric, adolescents and/or geriatric patient group, culture and diagnostic specific).
