The Director of the William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development is an essential member of the Division of Student Affairs and Department of Student Life management teams. The Director is responsible for the overall operations of the Center, with direct reporting responsibilities to the Assistant Vice President of Student Life and maintains a strong collaborative relationship with the Office of Civic and Community Engagement and the Shalala Student Center Complex. The Center also interfaces and collaborates with the other departments within Student Life: Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement, Multicultural Student Affairs, Student Activities and Student Organizations, and the LGBTQ Resource Center.

The mission of the Butler Center is to serve as a catalyst in developing students who cultivate positive social change within their communities. Acting as a clearinghouse for all service and leadership endeavors, the Center strives to develop synergistic partnerships within the faculty, campus, local and global community to bring these fundamental concepts to fruition and integrate them further into the campus community.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Summary of Role
  • Provide leadership, management, and supervision for the William R. Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development. Supervision of a staff team consisting of (1) Associate Director, (1) Assistant Director (1), Administrative Assistant, (2) Graduate Assistants, and (15) student employees and interns (Leadership Program Coordinators, Residential Life and Commuter Services Coordinator, Social Justice Education Coordinator, First Year Engagement Coordinator, Graphic Designer, Communications Coordinator, Graphic Design Coordinator, Community Partner and Departmental Liaison, Service Program Coordinators, and Student Experience Coordinators).

  • Create, plan and implement outcome-driven assessment tools for departmental programs and services which includes all co-curricular aspects of community service and leadership development.
  • Develop and implement effective marketing strategies to promote all programs and services of the Butler Center, to include innovative use of social media and electronic media including newsletters and graphics.
  • Work with University Communications and Government and Community Relations to highlight the impact of student-led projects within the Miami Dade County.
  • Oversee departmental staffing for weekend and travel to include (but not limited to) service days, IMPACT Leadership Retreat, ACC Leadership Symposium, ACC Advocacy Days, retreats, Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) Presidential Fellows Program, Leadership UMiami for Democracy and Social Change program, and Clinton Global Initiative University.
  • Serve as a chaperone with at Level 2 Background Check for service events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Vice President of Student Life.

SERVICE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
  • Develop and sustain community partnerships with local organizations and agencies to address various community needs, populations and social issues. Form liaisons with community leaders and community service representatives. Establish networks with state and national service organizations, other colleges and universities, and other programs. Collaborate with service and community organizations such as Campus Compact, Hands on Miami network, United Way, Teach for America, City Year, AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, and the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce.
  • Oversee the management of the community volunteer placement process for students which includes the development and administration of a community partner database, agency outreach and orientation, tracking of student placements and hours, and assessment of experience (student and agency).
  • Serve as a primary campus administrator overseeing the Galaxy Digital Volunteer umbrella which provides access to volunteer opportunities for faculty, staff and students. Manage the content along with cultivating the virtual relationship with community partners submitting volunteer opportunities. Provide direct support for over 250 community partners and calculate the tabulation of over 200,000 student community service hours.
  • Oversee and collect documentation for an annual report that highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems in the communities they serve.
  • Facilitate student-led and university-wide programming initiatives aimed at bringing awareness to social justice issues. Programming to include events such as: Social Justice Week, Tunnel of Oppression, Hug the Lake, Holiday Gift Drive, `Canes for a Change Week, and National Volunteer Awareness Week.
  • Partner with the Office of Civic and Community Engagement to create and sustain civic engagement co-curricular opportunities for students that have community service and leadership development components and help link those experiences to integrative learning and reflection.
  • Represent the Butler Center on the Civic and Community Engagement Task Force. Work directly with faculty, staff, and students support the Task Force's success in implementing co-curricular programs.
  • Direct the Civic Scholars Program, which encourages 50 students to become engaged citizens through participating in a variety of CIVIC courses, research projects, and co-curricular programs and graduating with the distinction of a UM Civic Scholar.
  • Instruct and/or supervise the Reflections Workshop for students in their final semester of the UM Civic Scholars Program.
  • Oversee selection of the Campus Compact Newman Civic Fellow Award that honors sophomores and juniors. Prepare application on behalf of the UM President who submits to the National Campus Compact awards committee.
  • Direct University of Miami's participation in the Clinton Global Initiative U Network, a growing consortium of colleges and universities that support, mentor, and provide $10,000 in seed funding to leading student innovators and entrepreneurs on their respective campuses.
  • Supervise the Social Innovation Grant program which supports new volunteer initiatives in the community by UM students. Grants provide up to $500 in seed funding toward a new social venture that will support and benefit the South Florida community.
  • Coordinate the University of Miami's participation in the ACC Education Advocacy trip to Washington, D.C. and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF) Presidential Fellows Program. Organize student-led campaigns in support of independent higher education and the Effective Access to Student Education (EASE) grant.
  • Directly advise, oversee logistics, prepare risk management documentation and serve on emergency call for the University of Miami Alternative Breaks (UMAB) and Miami International Outreach student organizations, which includes the coordination of 12-15 trips during fall, winter, summer and spring breaks within the United States and Territories and abroad.

  • Advise Get Out the Vote (GOTV) and oversee the membership of UM as a Voter Friendly Campus through NASPA and Campus Vote Project.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
  • Provide administrative oversight, supervision, and staff advisement to 20 program boards/student organizations and 20 affiliated student organizations/programs with approximately 2,000 total student members. Provide consultation and advice to student organizations on program planning for community service events.
  • Develop and implement innovative student leadership development programs that include First Year U, symposiums, retreats, leadership series, workshops, and on-line training modules. Create a comprehensive set of leadership experiences which is outcomes-driven and that equips students with the knowledge, skills and abilities to be agents of social change in an evolving global society. Assist student organizations in planning leadership speakers and retreats. Coordinate the annual Celebration of Student Involvement awards process and reception.
  • Provide direct guidance for First Year U (FYU), an intensive and interactive leadership program held during the fall semester for first-year students.

  • Develop and implement the IMPACT Leadership Retreat for 40 students each fall semester. Serve as the staff adviser for the development and curriculum of the program leading 10 student leaders that serve as facilitators. IMPACT is a weekend leadership retreat.

  • Oversee the recruitment and selection of students representing the University of Miami at the Athletic Cost Conference (ACC) Leadership Symposium.

  • Oversee the Service & Leadership Liaison program, which serves as a link between the Butler Center and first-year residential and commuter communities.
  • Advise the 'Canes Emergency Response Team (CERT), a group of students that complete an emergency management and disaster preparedness curriculum created by FEMA and the Miami-Dade Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. Coordinate all mock disaster drills, skill development exercises, on-going advanced certifications, etc. and collaborate with community partners (fire rescue, public safety, environmental health & safety, etc.) to create appropriate protocols including safety annexes. Work closely and in conjunction with UM Police and the Director of UM Emergency Management on training and deployment matters. Develop, administer and manage grant contracts received for CERT from various funding sources.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
  • Fiscal responsibility, including preparation, management, and analysis, for an annual departmental budget exceeding $350,000.
  • Fiscal responsibility for programming board and student organization budgets (approximately $250,000 annually) allocated through the Student Activity Fee Allocation process.
  • Oversee the Butler Center Student Advisory Board which distributes $20,000 in student fees to student service organizations that request funding for service and leadership-based programs.
  • Generate outside funding for volunteer and leadership development programs from federal, state, and local grants, as well as private sources.

UNIVERSITY/NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
  • Represent University of Miami on the Athletic Coast Conference (ACC) Student Leadership Symposium Advisory Board and provide general oversight and long-range planning.
  • Maintain University of Miami's membership as a NASPA Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) Lead Institution. Position serves as the primary contact at UM along with overseeing the UM designation as a Lead Advisory Institution.
  • Maintain and secure University of Miami's membership as a Voter Friendly Campus through NASPA and Campus Vote Project.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's degree in higher education or related field required.

WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Seven (7) years' experience in higher education or related field required.
  • Experience in community service, civic engagement, non-profit, and/or leadership development preferred.

  • A proven ability to effectively collaborate and build strong relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

  • Ability to be visionary, innovative, and strategic in leading a departmental unit.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
