The mission of the University of Michigan Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) is to catalyze, support, and safeguard U-M research. Our team works to create opportunities, build partnerships, and provide support to U-M researchers to accelerate discovery that improves quality of life for our state, nation, and world.
OVPR is seeking an assistant vice president for research-strategic initiatives (AVP). We are looking for someone who can help the U-M research community more effectively identify and seize opportunities to produce and conduct high-impact research. The AVP will work with the Vice President and OVPR leadership to support, develop, lead, and evaluate cross campus projects, committees, and strategic engagements with internal/ external stakeholders and community partners to advance U-M's vital research mission. This position reports directly to the Vice President for Research and Innovation.
The ideal candidate will:
In partnership with the VPR and other leaders, develop, lead, and implement strategic initiatives that improve the competitiveness, impact, and accessibility of research at U-M.
Work with faculty and staff across all three campuses to identify strategic priorities, administer programs, develop and implement internal policies, and increase research competitiveness.
Help build new partnerships with key external stakeholders including academia, industry, foundations, and government.
Represents the U-M Office of Vice President for Research across campus serving as a key member on committees, task forces, and councils.
Generate and coordinate assignments, as needed. Work independently to complete assignments involving the appropriate internal or external contacts.
Other duties as assigned
A Master's degree or equivalent is required
Outstanding writing and communication skills are required
Significant experience in a research environment, research-related government agency, research-related business or related academic settings is preferred
Demonstrated commitment to DE&I principles
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse community of stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise teams and projects on behalf of executive leadership, including setting priorities and ensuring deliverables are met
PhD preferred
