Summary
The Language Resource Center (LRC) is a unit within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) that supports faculty, staff, and students involved in the study of languages, literatures, and cultures at the University of Michigan. The LRC is located on the first floor of North Quad, where we maintain the Main Center with a media library and diverse resources for students, faculty, and staff, with spaces for group and independent study, computer workstations, computer classrooms, and an audio/video production studio. We support faculty in materials development, technology integration, and offer instructional support and consultation. The staff support videoconferencing for global exchanges between classes, and the Big10 Academic Alliance Courseshare program.Our unit regularly hosts, arranges, and sponsors events for faculty, staff, and students, including: Translate-a-thon, pedagogical presentations, cultural events, and activities related to language and culture.
The University of Michigan Language Resource Center (LRC) invites applications for an Information Specialist to manage the day-to-day operations of our world language focused media center/library, and to provide leadership and vision related to our collections, resources and programming that serve the language teaching and learning community on campus. The person in this position will supervise a full-time assistant, temporary staff of approximately 10 students in the basic operations of the center, supervise and mentor graduate students working on special projects, as well as coordinate the use of our various resources, services and facilities. This position is considered the main "face" of the LRC, interacting with a majority of the faculty who use our resources in the support of their teaching. Responsibilities*
Collection Management: Identify and evaluate value and usage of collection in relation to current and future needs of constituents, determine policy for collections (development, cataloging, circulation, weeding, and archiving). Oversee management of digital video content, including rights management, digitization, upload to Canvas LMS. Oversee faculty reservations, and collaborate with other U-M media collections to leverage campus resources.
Information and Systems Management: Evaluate and manage technical systems and databases to support the operations of the main center including; circulation system, online catalog, online tutor and conversation database, subscription services such as Yabla and Mango. Oversee technical documentation and usability of all areas of LRC main center. Analyze current and upcoming trends in technology; advise on integration into current services/resources as appropriate. Create annual reports that reflect annual center activity.
Main Center Operations Management: Analyze and resolve issues/problems with collections, resources or facility; coordinate scheduling of center spaces. Hire student staff and oversee Operations Supervisor to train, motivate and empower student staff to handle daily operational interactions. Work with Operations Supervisor to involve student staff in additional services to student patrons, such as peer tutoring, conversation practice. Assist with programming activities and events related to language and culture, which may include activity creation/development, coordination, staffing and publicizing, in collaboration with LRC staff, student organizations or faculty.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree and 2 to 3 years work experience in library or media center, higher education administration, or foreign language related field
- Demonstrated interest in foreign languages and cultures
- At least 2 years experience using large (relational) databases
- Excellent communication, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to working effectively within a diverse faculty, student, and staff population
Desired Qualifications*
- Masters degree from an ALA accredited Library or Information Sciences program
- 3 to 5 years professional experience in library science, information system design and development, website design, social media for organizational communication. Experience with Filemaker Pro.
- Proficiency in a world language, and experience/understanding of translation
