The Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center (KECC) carries out research in epidemiology, public policy, economics, outcomes research relating to End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), chronic kidney disease, and organ transplantation (http://www.kecc.sph.umich.edu). KECC maintains a comprehensive historical database of over 3 million ESRD patients drawn primarily from Medicare data.
The Kidney Epidemiology and Cost Center (KECC) measures and reports the quality of healthcare, seeks to improve the effectiveness of clinical practice, and informs national public policy regarding organ failure and treatment. Responsibilities*
- Provide Database management to support ETL. Implementation of complex computer code, evaluation of data for quality assurance purposes, production of various deliverables, and writing supporting documents.
- Write programs in SAS, Oracle, Python, and/or R for data preparation, standard analysis file creation, statistical analysis, and reporting, including programs requiring complex combination of data from multiple sources. Devise and carry out detailed testing plans to verify the proper operation of the systems and to validate the resulting datasets, analyses, and reports. Develop and conduct regression testing to ensure software still performs.
- Develop and maintain the KECC database (a comprehensive historical database of more than 3 million ESRD patients drawn primarily from Medicare data) using SAS and/or Oracle as the primary platform including working with others to complete monthly, quarterly, and yearly updates and reports. Build table relationships and establish documentation to ensure regular database updates.
- Develop the analytical and statistical approaches for particular research questions. Work with other staff members and faculty members to evaluate chronic and end stage renal disease research findings.
- Create or update detailed system documentation including documentation of program code, research guides for projects, data dictionaries, and systems or functional processes.
- Analyze multiple input data sources for changes in format or content as part of the production process and to determine whether and how they can be used for particular research questions. Design and carry out modifications to the existing systems to accommodate changes and assess alternative solutions.
- Participate in meetings and conference calls with research sponsors to define research questions and deliverables, determine data reporting requirements, present results, and determine next steps. Answer questions from the community and external contractors about measure calculations and carry out investigations into data irregularities.
- Perform independent critical analyses of pertinent literature, Medicare rules and regulation, and legislation. Contribute to research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentation at conferences and workshops.
Required Qualifications*
- Bachelor's degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Public Policy, Epidemiology, Economics, Computer Science, or a related field or equivalent experience. Three or more years of experience using SAS, or similar tools, for data management and/or statistical analysis
- Proven experience developing and managing relational databases of significant size, including building tabel relationships and establishing documentation to ensure regular database updates
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
Work Locations
This position can be fully remote. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change dependent on the business needs of the hiring department, through the course of employment.
