Job Description

The successful applicant for this position will manage the Laboratory for Infectious Disease Research (LIDR) Biosafety level 3 (BSL-3) facility at the University of Missouri and participate in the infectious disease research mission of the LIDR. The director will be responsible for developing and implementing budgets, managing research programs for internal and external clients, serving as a technical advisor for LIDR projects, and serving as the primary internal and external advocate for the LIDR. The director will join a strong group of infectious disease researchers, including virologists, bacteriologists, immunologists, with interests in vector-borne diseases and comparative medicine. The successful candidate will be able to be considered for a tenure track, non-tenure track, or staff appointment based upon the individual's qualifications and career objectives.


Duties:
Manage the biocontainment research operations of the BSL-3 and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL-3) containment facilities within the LIDR at the University of Missouri. In addition to the biocontainment facilities, BSL-2 laboratory and vivarium space is available. The LIDR Director reports to the Vice Chancellor for Research. The Director is the supervisor for LIDR staff (including Facility Manager, Biosafety Officer, directors of the Aerobiology, Animal Modelling, and Innate Immunity Core facilities, and administrative and technical support staff). The Director chairs the LIDR Oversight Committee, the ABSL3 management committee, and participates in standard operating procedures and Select Agent Plan development and review. The Director is responsible for ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations regarding biocontainment and Select Agent activities. The Director provides leadership in communication with NIH, CDC, and other federal agencies with regard to maintaining lines of communication, pursuing research opportunities, and building collaborations. The Director will work with scientists both at MU and elsewhere to build research and service activity at LIDR. The Director represents LIDR at appropriate conferences and forums to present and market LIDR capabilities. The Director works with LIDR faculty to develop a research vision for the facility.

The Director is responsible for budget planning and approval at LIDR, approval of large expenses, and evaluation of LIDR staff. The Director must have extensive infectious disease experience with one or more BSL-3 pathogens and is expected to actively participate in the research mission of LIDR.

The LIDR Director will hold a tenure/tenure track appointment in the Department of Veterinary Pathology in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Doctoral degree in infectious disease-related field, postdoctoral training, and experience working with BSL3 pathogens. Ability to pass Select Agent Security Risk and Personnel Suitability Assessments and obtain the required medical clearances to work with animals and infectious agents within 6 months of hire.

Candidates will also be evaluated on:

  • Working knowledge of NIH and CDC guidelines.
  • Excellent verbal, written, computer and interpersonal skills.
