The University of Missouri Fire and Rescue Training Institute (MU FRTI) provides training throughout Missouri and nationally, to volunteer and career firefighters, fire specialists, fire officers, members of industrial and institutional fire brigades, and members of allied emergency services organizations.
This Instructional Support Associate is responsible for manual and clerical work involving the performance of varied activities including receiving, storing, issuing, delivering, and shipping of widely diversified or specialized supplies to support instructional delivery for the Institute. Position works directly with internal and external customers/clients of the Institute. This position performs customer service work, point of service/sales, and technical assistance with equipment. The position is also responsible for a diverse fleet of vehicles, trailers and mobile training props and equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Responsible for managing and coordinating the processing of instructional materials and training support equipment related to the delivery of technical training and education related to the continuing professional education of fire and emergency service personnel. This includes providing customer service to the Institute’s technical specialists, staff, and adjunct instructor cadre, along with students, fire chiefs, elected officials, and other emergency service personnel and managers. Individual filling the position must be able to evaluate needs, problem solve, and develop solutions to meet customer expectations.
Responsible for inventory, receiving, storage, and delivery of instructional support materials. Independently perform difficult tasks in connection with proper inventory levels, equipment readiness, establishing which materials are required based upon type of course delivery, and most efficient delivery methods.
Unload and unpack incoming materials, supplies, and equipment, check delivery receipts with purchase orders; may record items received on inventory cards and other records.
Check, sort and store incoming supplies and materials in appropriate storage area in/on racks, shelves, bins, cabinets, special storage containers, etc. May stamp storage items with identifying code number of prepare inventory sheet for inclusion with supplies.
Assemble orders; wrap, box, crate, mark, and otherwise prepare outgoing shipments to meet scheduled deliveries; load materials, supplies, tools, and equipment in vehicles, trailers or training props; deliver and receive supply items; obtain authorizing signatures on order acknowledging receipt of delivered goods.
Assist in keeping a perpetual inventory of stock as it is received and issued. May write request for requisitions for replenishment of stock, searching catalogs, technical bulletins, nomenclature lists, etc., to identify special items; rearrange and replace items on shelves; assist in taking periodic inventories of stock.
Select, determine, and apply procedures, and methods without specific interpretation from supervisors; make recommendations concerning alignment of services to operating needs; refer situations involving major deviations from established methods to a supervisor and make recommendations suggesting course of action to be taken.
Manage the FRTI Resource Center – control and maintain needed inventory; purchase manuals and instructional materials; procure apparel and other resale items; handle all student material sales and shipments; working within set budgets, and tracking expenses and revenues.
Serve as a back-up to the FRTI Educational Program Coordinator III .
May assist the faculty or staff in setting up and in operating items of equipment for training.
Perform varied filing and clerical duties. Process requisitions and credit memorandums; check tally-ins against purchase orders; prepare necessary data processing forms for new stock items received and enter prices in appropriate catalogues; record documents in registers, listing such data as purchase order number, date received, date issued, etc; prepare necessary reports.
Clean and detail vehicles and trailers including inspection and performing technical maintenance of equipment and training props related to fire and rescue services.
Review monthly vehicle fuel statements and assure that receipts are accounted for.
Coordinate with University garage on any maintenance or recall issues for vehicle fleet.
Operate vehicles including vans, SUVs, pickup trucks and large road tractors; two-wheel carts or dollies, and other materials handling equipment incidental to performance of duties.
Perform duties of transport driver to haul and deliver equipment trailers and mobile training props to various training locations both in-state and out-of-state as required to meet training schedules.
Conduct all activities in accordance with the Civil Rights Acts, Title IX, Rehabilitation, Americans with Disabilities Act and local, state and region affirmative action plans.
As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of MU Extension.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work activity takes place in a variety of settings and extremes including office, storage areas, classroom, outdoor practical training areas, confined spaces, elevated areas, water environment, live fire and other potentially hazardous environments and atmospheres. In addition, work activities may require the use of and the wearing of specialized personal protective clothing/equipment for firefighters, rescuers, hazardous materials, and industrial workers.
LEADERSHIP RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Administrative supervision is received from the FRTI Educational Program Coordinator III. Functional supervision is exercised over specialized adjunct, and contract instructors or other technical areas as assigned. Additional staff may also be assigned dependent on program needs.
