The UNM-Valencia Upward Bound Program is seeking an On-Call Counselor/Social Worker. This is a grant-funded, ten-hour weekly position with current available funding through 08/31/2024.
The Counselor Social Worker will work as a team member with other program staff, responsible for providing personal, academic, and career counseling for 55 high school students in this college preparatory program. The candidate will provide individual and group counseling with emphasis on skill building that will facilitate student success in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. The position will provide workshops that focus on the topics of academic and personal goals setting, time management, study skills, substance abuse prevention, communication skills, social skills, substance abuse prevention, and communication skills. The Counselor will also complete individual education/success plans and updates with each of the students.
Located about 30 miles south of Albuquerque in rural Valencia County, The University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus is a two-year branch campus of The University of New Mexico which functions as a community college in the region and is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution. With an emphasis on teaching excellence, Valencia Campus offers academic transfer programs, technical vocational programs, Adult Basic Education, and Dual Credit High School/College courses to Valencia and Socorro Counties. The faculty and staff serve a student body of approximately 2,400 students per semester. UNM has earned the platinum-level distinction from FamilyFriendlyNM.org for its workplace policies.

Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work, or directly related field; at least 6 months of directly related experience which may include internship and/or practicum. Certification/Licensure NM licensure as LPCC, LPC, LMHC, LMSW, LCSW, or equivalent level, OR licensed out of state and eligible for NM licensure.
Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting.
- Experience performing career/academic assessments.
- Experience planning and implementing life skill/career development curriculum.
- Demonstrated knowledge of adolescent development
- Bilingual English/Spanish (speak, read, and write)
