Position Summary | The University of New Mexico (UNM) Prevention
Research Center (PRC) invites applications for an Assistant Professor, research
track, to lead studies related to health promotion and prevention for children
and families, to begin immediately.
The UNM PRC is one of 26 PRCs in a
network of academic research centers funded by the Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC). The centers,
located across the United States, study how people and their communities can
improve health outcomes and avoid or counter the risks for chronic
illnesses. The centers work in
partnership with communities to develop, implement, evaluate and improve
initiatives that can promote health and prevent chronic disease. They also translate research results into
policy and practice, and share findings broadly with national, state, and
community partners. The UNM PRC has been
continuously funded since 1995 and is conducting dozens of projects that a
spectrum of national and state agencies and foundations support.
We seek a candidate who can provide
leadership in sustaining and expanding the ongoing robust and exciting research
of the PRC, particularly in areas related to behavioral health, children and
their families and communities. The
successful candidate will have familiarity with using mixed methods, collecting
data, using administrative databases, advanced statistical methods, and
disseminating findings for other research professionals as well as for
non-scientists. The candidate will have
a track record of writing proposals to obtain support for research
studies. An important role will be to
mentor staff and students in conducting community-engaged research. A strong candidate will have a background in
behavioral health, experience working with Spanish-speaking populations and can
demonstrate managing the administration and execution of externally funded
research projects.
Duties and responsibilities for this position
may include:
1. Serves as principal author on reports for publication in peer-reviewed journals as well as for non-scientist policymaker audiences based on original research; presents findings at local, national and international meetings. 2. Provides technical and statistical leadership and consultation to research staff, collaborators, programmers and graduate students on research design, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination. 3. Independently implements complex research projects by leading the planning of schedules, developing budgets, and managing workflow. 4. Maintains currency of knowledge with respect to advanced state-of-the-art data collection, administration and management technologies and systems, and analytic methods; helps the PRC as a whole and colleagues improve the quality of their research and remain competitive in national grant competitions. 5. Serves as principal investigator on multiple projects, defining the scope and direction of the research, leading research design and specifying models, and engaging in planning activities (monitoring budgets, timelines, IRB, COI, etc.) in addition to leading scientific activities. 6. Represents the PRC in external collaboration and communication, including through professional activities in the field (locally and nationally), participation in the national PRC network, and other types of representation. 7. Mentors students and other staff members on research and training professional development. 8. Supervises research staff, student assistants, administrative assistants, and programmers to execute research studies; teaches and advises on research techniques. 9. Prepares grant proposals to obtain additional funding in areas related to prevention research. 10. Supervises student assistants, administrative assistants, programmers, and other staff to execute research, evaluation and surveillance studies; advises on research techniques; collaborates with PRC principal investigators on design, analysis and reporting of prevention research. |
Qualifications | Minimum
Qualifications: - An earned doctorate (PhD., Dr.PH, ScD, MD or equivalent) in public health or other relevant discipline.
- Demonstrated experience in leadership, research, mentoring, and writing successful grant applications in prevention research and evaluation.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
Preferred Qualifications: - 3 years of experience in health promotion and diseases prevention with diverse populations in New Mexico, ideally experience with working with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education (SNAP-Ed) and social marketing.
- A record of obtaining external funding as principal investigator or co-investigator.
- Track record of working with multi-disciplinary research teams.
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
