Position Summary

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of New Mexico (UNM) anticipates hiring Adjunct Faculty to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in the Fall 2023, Spring 2024, and Summer 2024 Semesters.

Anticipated openings will be for Adjuncts who can teach courses in a broad range of subject areas, including but not limited to the subject areas covered in the following UNM courses:

  • ASTR 1115 Intro Astronomy
  • ASTR 1115L Intro Astronomy Lab
  • PHYS 1115 Survey of Physics
  • PHYS 1120 Intro to Applied Physics
  • PHYS 1230 Algebra-Based Physics I
  • PHYS 1231 Prob Algebra-Based Physics I
  • PHYS 1240 Algebra-Based Physics II
  • PHYS 1241 Prob Algebra-Based Physics II
  • PHYS 1310 Calculus-Based Physics I
  • PHYS 1311 Prob Calculus-Based Physics I

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is seeking qualified temporary part time faculty members to teach undergraduate and/or graduate level classes in various disciplines as specified above. Instructors are responsible for all aspects of any class they are teaching. Responsibilities will include but not be limited to meeting with the class during assigned times, delivering the course curriculum, developing and grading assignments, reporting grades, and assessing student learning outcomes as outlined by the Chair of the department or Director of the program.  

Positions are contingent upon need each semester as determined by student enrollment levels, courses on the current course schedule, and demand driven by graduation requirements.  Positions may be filled or eliminated each semester up to the deadline for students to drop or add courses.  Candidates who are selected for these positions will report to the Chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

For best consideration, please apply by the following dates:

Fall 2023 semester – July 1, 2023
Spring 2024 semester – November 1, 2023

Summer 2024 semester – March 15, 2024  
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

To teach courses as described above are determined by Higher Learning Commission’s accreditation requirements for faculty, and must be met by one of these ways:

1.       Master’s Degree or higher in Physics or Astronomy or subfield for which you are applying;

Or

Master’s degree or higher in a field other than Physics or Astronomy that is related to the position for which you are applying;

Or

Successful completion of at least 18 graduate credit hours in an accredited program in the discipline or subfield for which you are applying

Preferred Qualifications:

1.      Two years professional experience in the specialization or subfield

2.      An earned doctorate from an accredited institution

3.      Successful teaching experience in a post-secondary institution

4.   A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities
