Position Summary | Position Summary: The Writing Tutors will work under the direct supervision of the TRIO/SSS Program Director and Senior Tutors at the Center for Academic Learning (CAL) at UNM Gallup. Tutors will provide academic tutoring services to a wide variety of individuals and groups. Tutors will guide and assist students with writing assignments, test/quiz review, and other Writing and English related requirements. Tutors will also collaborate regularly with the professional staff to aid in a variety of tasks. Applicants for this position should be able to work flexibly, particularly during late afternoon and night hours on Monday & Friday 8:00am -5:00pm and Tuesday-Thursday: 8:00am-7:00pm. Must be available for training sessions on various scheduled Fridays. Duties and Responsibilities: · Provide one-on-one tutoring, and/or facilitate group study sessions, and/or tutor virtually to guide students with their Writing/English assignments, projects, and other writing related tasks. · Successful completion of English 1120 and/or Technical Writing, or facility with computer applications such as google docs, spreadsheets, or zoom, or other special experience or skills that could be useful in their tutoring of writing. · Participate in classroom visits, new student orientations, and/or booths to help promote CAL services to the UNM-Gallup community. · Implement tutoring strategies that accommodate different learning styles and needs. · Works with support staff to provide and promote a fun, safe and positive study environment. · Maintains and updates confidential records, ensuring that ethical and legal guidelines are maintained in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) · Must have the ability and willingness to work with students from diverse cultural backgrounds with various levels of academic preparation pursuing a variety of majors. · Communicate well with students and provide motivation and positive reinforcement. · Assist with special events (Workshop, Trainings, etc.) · Complete required/requested training and participate in the CRLA certification requirements. Attending all staff meetings and training courses as required. · Help maintain the lab – put away supplies, textbooks, light cleaning, etc. · Keep up to date with assignments in the courses and prepare students for quizzes and exams. · Other duties as assigned. |
Minimum Qualifications | |
Preferred Qualifications | Preferred Qualifications: · Must be an enrolled UNM-Gallup student with at least 6.0 (six) hours of instruction per semester. · Must have skills and knowledge in Microsoft Office programs. · Must have knowledge in the correct usage of APA, MLA, and Chicago citation. · Must be adept in English convention topics and be able to immediately identify issues in grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence format, etc. · Must have good interpersonal and customer service skills. |
